The Artist’s Thoughts on Creativity, Inspiration, New Projects

First and foremost, I believe we are all creative spirits, but some of us have, well, been talked out of it. I have run into so many folks who have said, “I used to love to draw, but I found out I wasn’t good at it when a teacher/brother/parent/best friend said… so I don’t draw anymore.” The power we give to those stray words! In all likelihood, the people who said the negative comments have long forgotten they said them, but we carry their foul words like a wound festering in our hearts, barring us from exploring our true creative selves. My advice, for what it is worth – forget the critics! Who cares! Creativity must out!

For myself, I so enjoy venturing into anything creative. I don’t need to be the best at it – I need to ENJOY it! Following is one of my favorite examples – I am not a singer (as you will hear), but thanks to the belief and amazing talent of composer Robin Frost, I had the delightful experience of hearing my poetry come to life as lyrics for the first time. Since then other musicians have asked and used my lyrics for their songs, and I love the experience every time! Here are the results of one of my collaborations with Robin Frost, “House Cleaning Rag” – I think it will make you smile – I know I smile every time I hear it!

Encouraged by the fun of writing lyrics, I have now written an entire musical – or rather the lyrics for a musical. I am seeking a composer to team up with for the rest – so if you are interested in composing an entire musical to my lyrics, give me a holler!

Following is an excerpt from one of my books – “Tempo – The Rhythm and Rhyme of the Artist.” In this book, I paired up my art with my poetry and musings:

Creating is automatic and difficult to stifle – I see something and am inspired either to celebrate its spirit, or to borrow from its essence.  It is my way of both sharing my excitement of being with the world, and of being in harmony in our world.  In each work, in some way, I comprehend and communicate the soul of what I experience, or what I wish could be, and as I create I am lost in that work, in what “is.” Oddly, once the work is done, it is almost as if someone else created it – the work becomes akin to a lost photo of a distant vacation unexpectedly found – triggering something real in my heart yet intangible in definition – a slice of a past life captured within four corners of canvas,  by its nature destined to shine from that canvas to express the “me” as I was in that moment, to the “you” as you are today.

Thinking about art and creativity, how they connect us not only today but across the generations, inspired me to write the following poem:

Undiscovered dreams
an unexpected journey
Drifting along memories and hopes
a sweet yearning

Of what could be
Should be
May still

All there for my eye to see
In this painting on the wall.

The above thoughts and poem reprinted from “Tempo – The Rhythm and Rhyme of the Artist.”  (c) and TM M. Nicole van Dam.  All Rights Reserved.

Kisses

Kisses is a romantic artwork where I created kisses in an almost leopard print type pattern, in rich reds and blacks, using a new art technique I’ve been developing.   I had so much fun creating this.   I wanted to create a canvas that could be viewed from any direction, as if covered with kisses, that was also full of movement and rich reds.  It was a challenge to create kisses of different shapes and sizes that looked passionate in a fun way.   Kisses was created in 2016.   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Balboa Bay

Artimagination : January 27, 2016 6:06 pm : New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Portfolio, The Artist's Thoughts

Balboa Bay by M. Nicole van Dam

Balboa Bay  is my memory of where I grew up, in Newport Beach, with all the sun fun and sailing that goes with it. I wanted you to feel like you were flying into my memories of Balboa like a seagull, so that is why the artwork has the perspective that it does.   The view is as if you were heading along the lovely Balboa Ferry route from Balboa Island to the Balboa Peninsula.   I made sure to add in many birds (seagull, pelicans, and lavender-colored birdlike swoops) and the seals (and even a dolphin on the sail of a sailboat) to honor the nature that exists in Newport along the very developed coast.   This is a bright, cheery artwork, an homage to my happy memories. Many thanks to my wonderful parents for giving me such a lovely environment to grow up in! This is the first artwork I created in 2016.  Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

A Cardinal Christmas

Artimagination : December 1, 2015 11:32 pm : Nature and Animals, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Portfolio, The Artist's Thoughts

Cardinal Christmas

In Cardinal Christmas  I wanted to create a bright, cheery nature-themed artwork for the Winter holidays, with bright reds against a wintery sky.  If you look closely you will also see delicate pine cones tucked in tufts of snow and delicate pine needles – I wanted to make sure that first and foremost were the cheery reds but I still wanted to keep a woodland theme as well.   Cardinal Christmas, with its lively cardinal birds and poinsettias, was the last work I created in December 2015.  Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Autumn Uninterrupted

Artimagination : November 2, 2015 5:58 pm : Gardening & Animals & Inspirations, Nature and Animals, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet

Autumn UninterruptedAutumn Uninterrupted is my homage to M.C. Escher’s technique, because each outline of a leaf helps to form an outline of another leaf.  I also wanted to create the tumbling chaos and beautiful color of fall leaves, inspired by my love of nature and the beautiful fall colors I experienced on the East Coast.  The more you look at this artwork, the more leaves you will see, and in fact it is my hope that you can find yourself in a reverie of fall leaves!   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Poinsettia Passion

Artimagination : September 9, 2015 6:09 pm : New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Portfolio

Poinsettia Passion

Poinsettia Passion was inspired by the lush royal red abundance of overlapping poinsettias upon poinsettias during the holidays.  I used several different red pigments to create this work, to ensure that it didn’t look flat and too monotone.  I wanted each poinsettia to have its own personality.  I learned a lot about poinsettias while creating this work, including that the ‘flowers’ aren’t flowers at all – but rather are red leaves!  That gives each poinsettia a very interesting and unique, artistic look!    Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Country Autumn

Country Autumn ADJ EMAIL

Country Autumn is my way of welcoming the fall season, rich with holidays, with a warm impressionist palette and colorful fall foliage. I wanted to create a scene that reminded me of the lovely autumns I spent back East, which included wonderful walks at Treman park in upstate New York and other fall adventures. As a nod to the lovely waterways in Treman Park, I added fall leaves floating on water. I am grateful that “Country Autumn” was immediately licensed upon its 2015 creation for products due out in 2016, including scarves and rainboots. Color Chorus

Artimagination : August 1, 2015 2:37 am : New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Portfolio

Color Chorus

In Color Chorus  I wanted to play with Pointillism, which is the technique that lets your eye blend smallish dots of colors to see more colors.  This technique of Pointillism was invented by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in 1886, which was their fun detour from Impressionism.  I wanted to create a bright, cheery artwork that had lovely colors singing together.  Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Dance of the Fall Leaves

Artimagination : June 13, 2015 7:59 pm : In the Garden, Nature and Animals, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Portfolio

Dance of the Fall Leaves is one of those artworks that you can get totally lost in.  I intentionally created Dance of the Fall Leaves so that it has no true up or down or left or right – you can hang this artwork in any direction and it works.  Dance of the Fall Leaves is a very soothing artwork for me and an homage to the gorgeous Autumn colors I enjoyed every year on the East Coast. It also is a statement about beauty in all stages.  Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.

Spanish Rose

Artimagination : February 22, 2016 7:33 pm : New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, The Artist's Thoughts

Spanish Rose Spanish Rose celebrates the lively romance of the Spanish dance.  This work was inspired by Flamenco dancing first, but as I researched Spanish dance I learned that there is much more to Spanish dancing – including Bolero, Fandango, Paso doble, Sevillana, Muñeira, Jota Aragonesa, Sardana, and Zambra, so there is a bit of all of that inspiring this artwork.  I had so much fun creating this.   I wanted to create a scene that was full of movement and rich reds.  The triangles are meant to represent the taps of the dancing feet.  It was a challenge to create the two men in just the right size and position relative to the woman, and I love the heart shape the trio creates.   Spanish Rose was created in 2016.   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Rodeo Rose for emailing flat

Rodeo Rose is a feminine twist on the Western Rodeo, and features a female rider on her bucking bronco, surrounded by softly hued, almost suede like colors, roses, and lucky horse shoes.  Some of the horse shoes are interlinked to make hearts.  To me this artwork is also a bit about the lively ride we call life.  I wanted to create a scene rich in movement and a bit of rodeo chaos, yet also with the rider in control.  Getting horse and rider to look natural together was a fun challenge, and I love the heart shapes the doubled horse shoes create.   Rodeo Rose was created in 2016.   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Lady of the Leaves

Artimagination : October 20, 2015 9:54 pm : Gardening & Animals & Inspirations, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, The Artist's Thoughts

Lady of the Leaves

Lady of the Leaves

Lady of the Leaves, created in 2015, was inspired by my lovely childhood daydreams and imaginings (which I admit I still enjoy when working in my garden).  It was so fun to imagine flower fairies and magical beings enjoying the garden with me!  I wanted to use dreamy yet feminine earth tones where it appeared that the lady arises organically (and simplistically art nouveau style) from the leaves and blossoms.  This is also a nod to the earth mother that garening brings out in me!   I wanted to the roses to be a pink and beautiful balance to the leaves and geometrics.

Beautifully Big Ben

Artimagination : October 2, 2015 3:51 am : New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, The Artist's Thoughts

big ben draft

Beautifully Big Ben features not only Big Ben, but the flowers of England (the rose), Wales (the daffodil), Scotland (the Scottish thistle and the Scottish bluebell), and the clover of Northern Ireland.  The more you look a this artwork, the more you will see.   Getting the lush florals to balance with the detailed architecture of Big Ben was a fun challenge, and I love the soft tones in the water.   Beautifully Big Ben was created in 2016.   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

COFFEEEEEEEEE!

It just so happens I LOVE COFFEE!  Rarely do I create a painting without a handy cup of coffee standing by, and of course my iPod playing tunes!  I created a Coffee Carousel website with all my favorite coffees for each of our three (3!) coffee machines – enjoy at CoffeeHound.bz!

Here is a poem I wrote for my java habit:

Daily Ritual

Every morning
Sleepy out of bed
Tussled head
I stumble to the kitchen sink
Seeking one precious drink
Ever so slowly from my mug, sip by sip
Savoring every dark, rich drip
Precious nectar, warming heart and waking mind
That magic potion that fuels mankind…

Coffee

Wonderful Coffee
Warm Coffee
Aromatic
Sensatic
Irresistible to this java addict
Coffee.

In 2017, I was asked to read two of my works for television broadcast – very fun indeed! Of course I wore my “Dance of the Fall” Leaves kaftan based on my “Dance of the Fall” Leaves artwork. Here is the first of the two to be broadcast – my poem “Life is Like Knitting.” I chose two of my works that had a knitting reference to tickle my Mother’s sense of humor. Following is the video of the reading, and below the video I have put the poem itself.

As background on the poem itself, I had written about knitting, and life, some years ago, when I was starting anew before I met my wonderful husband. Knitting was a lovely part of my relationship with my Mother and also with my wonderful Aunt Barbara and her daughters Rika and Claire. The poem is apropos of so many of life’s changes and decisions:

Life is Like Knitting

Life is like knitting
Sometimes each stitch falls easily into place
Each row upon row flowing with grace
And then, a mistake, not easy to erase

A choice must be had
Do we go ahead flawed, looking a bit bad
Or do we unravel and then
Begin, begin, begin again?

With each new start
The old design deliberately picked apart
Carefully the yarn from the needle unfurls
Undoing all the knits and pearls
Cautious not to harm
The tender texture of the yarn

This life’s thread must be used to stitch again
In our universal pattern of row upon row, til time’s end
There is no shame in each start anew
No matter how many restarts or how few

The rows undone
In the redoing are part of life’s fun
The lessons learned along each knitted way
Can be used another day
To last, to warm our souls a little longer
Making our life’s knitting that much stronger.
