“Yellow Light” is about the tension between nature’s needs and man’s increasing urbanization, symbolized by the bird nesting in the yellow light, while human life and machinery happily go on in the background. The from-the-stop-light-looking-down perspective was chosen for the viewer to see things from the bird’s (aka nature’s) perspective rather than our own. The bird nesting in the yellow-colored light symbolizes that we are testing the limits of nature’s ability to adapt to human accomplishments. The artwork’s colors were chosen so that the yellow glow was important and to highlight the characters in tension – the yellow glow around the bird verses the yellow glow around the mother and daughter (symbolizing also the next generation learning from the current one). The yellow lines leading to the streets intersection symbolize the roads that have led us to this yellow light situation. The fact that the bird has chosen to nest in the yellow light rather than the trees nearby symbolizes that not all is bad – sometimes nature finds benefits from our machines, such as the warmth created for the nest by the yellow light. I created Yellow Light to share my concern that we are well into the “yellow light” zone of squeezing nature and our wildlife friends into our man-defined zones. Yellow Light is one of the artworks acquired by Community Memorial Hospital for their permanent collection.
