Spring is HERE and the Garden is ALIVE!

A Bounty of Roses - some of the lovely flowers that make my heart sing when I see them

It’s absolutely glorious outside!  Spring is here, the fruit trees have more flowers than ever, we have a few twittering bird tenants in the nesting boxes, and the veggie garden is planted!  -And yes, I know, the tomatoes will take over again, just like they do every year, and I probably won’t get to eat too many of those beckoning fruits on the peach, cherry, apple, apricot and Asian apple pear trees because the impish squirrels and happy birds usually get their bites first, and unless a miracle happens the raccoon will get all the corn again but…. I LOVE IT!  I’ll go organic again – that seems to work pretty well so far. There seem to be lots of grapes starting on the seedless red flame grape vines so maybe I will be able to nibble on some of those before the birds get them! It is absolute bliss to be in this green garden haven, with every step round the garden paths my heart soars and I find myself smiling just being there.  The dogs of course supervise everything – and make me smile with theiir antics.  The size difference between the Leonberger and the Chihuahua-Pomeranian-Papillion one of a kinder is a laugh in and of itself – and then add in the tennis ball chases and squirrel races and it’s all happy crazy.  Since we pruned the trees to open up the view, it seems the fruit trees have many more flowers than last year, AND as I sip my coffee, the view is inspiring. HAPPY HAPPY!  I hope these photos give you a smile too!

The Supervisors - a Leonberger and a Chihuahua-Pomeranian-Papillion One-of-a-Kinder!

Corn - All neat in a row, and waiting for the raccoon!

The center veggie bed - chard, tomatoes, basil, and a blueberry (blueberry still hanging in there)

So pretty and peaceful in the veggie garden!

Tomatoes and more Tomatoes, waiting to take over like they always do!

What is that bolted Kale still doing in the box? Has anyone ever let Kale turn into a tree before?

Blossoms on the Asian Apple Pear Tree - can't wait - YUM!

This year there are just oooodles of dount peach blossoms - maybe there will be enough for me AND the birds?

Creativity Central has been busy “busting” loose for fundraising for breast cancer!

January 2013 Creativity Central was full of fundraising creativity – we created bras for the silent auction and center pieces for the upcoming gala, called the CMH Gold Dust Gala, on March 23rd 2013, that raises funds for uninsured and under-insured women that need mammograms or suffer from breast cancer/need surgical treatment. At the end of the evening, the bras which serve as centerpieces, are auctioned off to the highest bidder, and the most outrageous bras often get the highest prices! Everyone brought some sort of extra special goodies to use on the bras – even ornamentation from the Zigfield Follies thanks to Allyson! We also used paints and supplies donated by CMH and the iLovetoCreate folks. Never was doing work for such a good cause so fun! Enjoy these photos of our fantastically creative Creativity Central team – you are sure to smile and admire their fearless creativity!

UPDATE: Just know we were every bit as creative for the October and November Creativity Central – we’ve just been too busy DOING to post! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hummingbird Memories

Commissioned Work

Hummingbird Memories was created as a commissioned work in 2008, using elements requested by my client – something that blended hummingbirds, apple orchards, a row boat, a barn and even hidden mixing spoons. I especially like the hummingbirds in this piece.  The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.

-of Fancy Pens and Pretty Papers

At last night Creativity Central, first we enjoyed a sneak peek of our now completed and assembled (but not yet framed) last Creativity Central project, entitled “Sea Scape”:

“Sea Scape” by Creativity Central

Many thanks to all the Creativity Central participants who worked so creatively as a fabulous inspirational team on this unique project – Joanie, Allyson, Carol, Anita, Hannah, Martina and Alex – I think you will agree – our “Sea Scape” creation is truly BEAUTIFUL!  We will be getting it framed and it will proudly hang along with our “Jammin Jungle” project at the Cancer Resource Center.

Then we first made pens with a flourish of ostrich feathers and color, and then used our special pens to write some thoughtful journalling, using Nicole’s latest book “Exploring the Successful You,” on beautiful papers kindly provided by Kathleen of the Cancer Resource Center.  Here are some of the photos of last night’s Creativity Central:

Newly Released Limited Edition Artworks on Their First Exhibit

A few weeks ago, M. Nicole van Dam got another call for an exhibit of her artwork – since there are already so many exhibits of her artwork going on concurrently, this meant releasing a Limited Edition series for several of Nicole’s works: Lion’s Paradise, Bench at Giverny, Meubles de Jardin, and Nature’s Kitchen. Also on exhibit are Nicole’s popular Gondolier of Venice (accompanied by Nicole’s poetry) and Lake of Dreams (Le Lac de Reves)(also accompanied by poetry). On its second ever exhibition is Jester (selected by Nancy, the owner of Hip Vegetarian Restaurant, where the artwork is displayed – Nancy discovered Nicole’s artwork through Dr. Kenneth Kafka, a supporter of Nicole’s art). Sailing and Chef at the Farmer’s Market are also on display, both adding color and fun. Voting Booth is also on display, along with Nicole’s poem on politics and a writeup about the painting – perfect for this politcal season! Nicole also owes a BIG thank you to her ever-patient, supportive and wonderful hubby – who hung every painting in the exhibit with his expert eye! As background on Lion’s Paradise, this lively artwork was inspired by Ginni and Chad Dreier’s lovely Ginger and Chadwick lion exhibit at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Here are some photos of this latest exhibit:

Gondolier of Venice (with poetry), Bench at Giverny, Meuibles de Jardin, the Jester, and Sailing

Beautiful Work by a Beautiful Team

Last night’s Creativity Central was filled with wonderfully whimsical colors and also real treasure – the “treasure” are the happy smiles we all shared.  -But we can’t minimize the great work!  Carol’s beautiful sculptures from last week, like the mermaid and the sea kelp, along with Allyson’s fearless creativity (not to mention her toothpick prickly sea urchin) and Joannie’s brilliant technique and eye for color, made this an extra special Creativity Central, and the wonderful underwater adventure we are creating is going to be truly spectacular and fun.  I am so proud of this team – and they are a beautiful team.  For example, Carol’s impressive mermaid that Carol had so lovingly sculpted was colored beautifully by Joannie, and we all shared different elements of what we worked on with each other, getting the most of the group’s collective creativity.  Here are some photos from this especially talented group:

Carol and Joannie’s Beautiful Mermaid
Allyson’s Whimsical Creations!

Vast treasure that added smiles!

Joannie’s gloriously colored creations.  We love them ALL!

Bank of America requests M. Nicole van Dam to Exhibit Artwork

Bank of America contacted Nicole recently asking her to once again display her art – and here are the photographs – the pieces currently exhibited at Bank of America include the ever-popular “Summer Afternoon,” “Cello Fantasy,” “Voting Booth,” “It’s Spring,” “Flowers & Song,” “Country Rose,” and “Flower Celebration.”  Nicole also included a write-up of “Voting Booth,” and we decided to display that photo right above the bank’s community board – seemed appropriate for voting season!  Many thanks to Bank of America for their continuing support of M. Nicole van Dam artworks.  Currently Nicole’s art is on display at more than 6 public venues, which is an unusual accomplishment for most artists.  Nicole also just received a request for another new exhibit to start on September 2, so details on that upcoming exhibit to follow shortly.

"Summer Afternoon" adds some banking cheer

"Cello Fantasy" adds some artistic flair to serious business

"Voting Booth" fittingly displayed right above the Bank of America Community Board

We guess Nicole's art must be pretty safe here, by the safety deposit banks!

Creativity Central Goes Beneath the Sea Last Night!

Last night we had an incredibly creative time – and thanks to Allyson, even modern technology made an appearance!  Allyson shared images on her smart phone to help the group create more realistic sea images – and the results are GREAT!  I think you’ll all be very impressed with the beautiful and fun creations we made last night.  These creations will be colored at the next session, and then added to the painting seascape we created at the last session (much as we did with the “Jammin Jungle”).  Allyson brought sea glass for us to incorporate as well – this is shaping up to be an amazing piece!  Carol’s mermaid will be a wonderful addition to the piece, and her kelp is beautifully sculpted.  Anita’s shell will give some nice depth and texture, and speaking of texture…check out Allyson’s sea urchin!  Here are some photos of the last session – and I think you’ll agree this was one creative dream team!

Allyson’s playfully pointy sea urchin!  Great creativity!

Anita’s beautifully textured and scalloped sea shell

Carol’s sculptural, beautiful kelp, fun mermaid, and great starfish! These will be wonderful additions to the painting!

A closeup of Carol’s GORGEOUS kelp – WOW!

Santa Barbara City Hall Exhibit Fun News

This morning I met wonderful, ever-patient and supportive (and excellent musician) Debbie at Santa Barbara’s beautiful and historic City Hall, and we added my “Lake of Dreams” and “Mission at Santa Barbara” artworks to join “Voting Booth” and “Summer Afternoon” there. I hope you enjoy the pictures – I forgot to bring a camera but thankfully Debbie had her cell phone! What did we do before cell phones?

Vegetable Garden Painting “Nature’s Kitchen”

My vegetable garden painting is done – I’ve named it “Nature’s Kitchen” in homage to my husband’s quip that when we harvest veggies for dinner we are going “grocery chopping.” It’s very similar to my garden – except maybe a bit more profuse where it should be and a bit less overgrown where it needn’t be 🙂 If you look closely, there is a little bunny nibbling on the romaine, and a happy bluebird by its nesting box – we do have the nesting box, and substitute a raccoon for the bunny… The painting, like my garden, has romaine, tomatoes, grape vines, strawberries, etc. We have a gate like that with the lucky horse shoe. In other words, the painting is how I like to see my garden. I’m working on a second painting with sunflowers now, along with a few others.

Here is what the painting looks like, if it were to be framed with green matting, which I’m thinking about doing:

"Nature's Kitchen" Vegetable Garden Artwork by M. Nicole van Dam

As an aside, we have a ban on plastic grocery bags to save the environment, and actually it hasn’t been a difficult change, we just leave the totes in the car. I’ve used this “Nature’s Kitchen” image on totebags and people seem to enjoy them, so that’s good news! While there are many totebags and carriers with my art on them, the totebags I use are at LetsgoShopping.bz – I like these because the price is right and they have a nice gusset at the bottom and seem to carry a lot. They’ve also been handy for picking up mail at the post office box, carrying the purse and sunglasses and phone and ipad and …. (how long is list going to get? NO more gadgets, PLEASE!). This particular totebag has Nature’s Kitchen on one side, and Chef at the Farmer’s Market on the other side – I thought those two themes went nicely together.

We Created More Grocery Totes!

We had both new friends and old friends at our May Creativity Central – and we had a magical, peaceful time – along with a few laughs and even some impromptu dancing!  Here are some of the photos of the lovely grocery tote bags we created using the fabric painting supplies generously donated by  iLOVEtoCREATE.  It feels good to be earth-friendly!

Allyson’s elegant design says it all – each color ribbon represents both a different friend and a different type of cancer being conquered.

Ruth’s whimsical design is sunny happy – and her bag, by its smile, looks like it is enjoying the process too!

A spring blending of paisleys and a pink ribbon creatively colored by Carol

Some great blending technique!

Ruth’s finished creation!  You have to smile when you see this bag!

Gondolier of Venice

Gondolier of Venice was inspired by the romance of the waterways of Venice, Italy.   The water effects in this artwork were very important to me to get right and difficult to execute.  I wanted Gondolier of Venice to have an engaging romantic and Impressionist flair.  The artwork is framed with lovely roses, and I wanted the perspective to be as if we are standing on a low footbridge over the canals of Venice, and we see one gondola just passing below, and looking ahead we see a second gondola.  I wanted the viewer to experience the canals of Venice.

History of the Gondolier of Venice:  The original work was created in 2005 and sold to a well-known philanthropist in Santa Barbara, California within only a few hours of its completion.  I do miss it!  However, I have a Limited Edition of this work hanging in my home, so I still get to enjoy it!  Another Limited Edition is part of the permanent collection at the lovely architectural masterpiece, the new Cancer Center of Community Memorial Hospital.    Gondolier of Venice is still available in Limited Edition prints and has been internationally licensed on glass plates, and also available also on other lovely items such as scarves, mugs and more, at Create.bz.

Bon Jour

Bon Jour was inspired by the romantic Eiffel Tower and cafes of Paris, France.   I wanted this artwork to have a soft, happy effect, and I also wanted it to be the sort of artwork that draws you in.  As you look closely you will see the Eiffel Tower in the background, and a cheery Cafe scene in the foreground, with dappled sunlight warming the tables.   You will also see cheerful arbors of roses.  This was a very complex work for me to create, but I am happy with it, and grateful it came out so well!  Bon Jour is one of my personal favorites.

Bon Jour has a very strong licensing history, and is available in Limited Edition prints and internationally licensed on garden and rain boots, glass plates, scarves and many lovely items, available at Create.bz.

Summer Afternoon

Summer Afternoon
Summer Afternoon was inspired by the warm, cheery sunny days of Summer.  In this artwork I wanted to give a nod to Van Gogh’s Sunflowers while at the same time working with a very sunny color palette.  Morning glories can be seen through the summery window.   The butterfly on the  vase adds some grace and movement to the artwork.  The wicker chair was difficult to execute because I wanted to use colors that added to the work, and yet not move too far from the recognizable – I am grateful it came out as well as it did!  I discovered in painting this artwork how fun it is to paint both sunflowers and hydrangea.  I wanted to make this artwork happy and yet peaceful.  I enjoy Summer Afternoon on my wall every day as part of my personal collection.

Summer Afternoon is available in Limited Edition prints and has been internationally licensed on glass plates and available on other lovely items as well, at Create.bz .
