Contemplating Eve

This is actually an artwork I painted of my grandmother – the only grandparent I ever knew. I wanted to underscore the beauty in all things – at all ages, symbolized by the fresh apples growing in the gnarled tree, for example. The Eve figure is very much my grandmother, who loved flowers. She only wore dresses, never wore pants, and I remember the folds the fabric of her dresses would make because she slumped a bit. She had keen blue eyes. In any event, a gallery wanted to show my artwork, and I didn’t have enough inventory so I let them show Contemplating Eve, assuming that no one would buy it for the high price I had set. Well… someone did! My grandmother is hanging above someone’s fireplace somewhere! I hope she is making them very happy!

Sun and Moon Montage

Sun and Moon Montage

This work was actually intended to be several works painted on one canvas, but Sun and Moon Montage has also achieved popularity as a single work. It is therefore a rather unintentionally unique montage of a wise and cheery sun and moon juxtaposed with frogs, a butterfly, various cats, peacock feathers, and a glorious peacock strutting. While different elements of Sun and Moon Montage have been licensed internationally, this artwork is also one of my works acquired by Community Memorial Hospital for its permanent collection.

Winter

Winter
Winter is a unique fusion of Asian artistic influences and colorful Autumn leaves and icy hydrangea. Winter was inspired by my long Ithaca winters while in school at Cornell University and the somewhat milder (but still snowy) winters in Philadelphia while I was in School at University of Pennsylvania. I also wanted to experiment in Winter with some interesting Asian and Greek influences, blended with a stylistically Impressionist flair.

Cello Fantasy

Cello Fantasy

Cello Fantasy was inspired by a wonderful cello performance at the symphony, where the cello soloist embraced the cello lovingly as the cello sang its resonant notes almost magically. I actually conceived the entire Cello Fantasy artwork during that beautiful solo performance. Cello Fantasy sold to a collector before it was finished, which made me nervous that perhaps they wouldn’t like the finished version! Luckily, they did!

Hummingbird Memories

“Hummingbird Memories” was originally created to be transformed into a commissioned silk scarf, in 2008. I first created the original artwork with the elements requested by my client – something that blended hummingbirds, apple orchards, a row boat, a barn and even hidden mixing spoons. While I retained the original artwork, the client received a lovely scarf to give to a valued friend. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. This artwork is emotionally a very important piece to me. It is about conquering life’s inevitable challenges, heart breaks and disappointments, and moving on to successful new horizons. Conquering life’s challenges, heartbreaks and disappointments is symbolized by the green roses on the outer bounds of the artwork getting tossed aside, while beautiful full roses thrive in the central vase. This artwork is my reminder that we can overcome difficult times and that the beauty is in the trying. Passion Flower was inspired by some unique tulips that I purchased at the amazing Los Angeles flower mart, as well as by the flower mart itself, filled with its hustling customers buying their flowers. The tulips were red with gold, in an almost inside-out shape. I have never seen tulips like them again, except for… painted on the wall of the MGM Casino in Los Vegas in a corner as part of their Wizard of Oz artwork! I decided that seeing those rare tulips over a slot machine was a good omen, so I bet my twenty five cents at the slot machine under the tulip artwork and … doubled my money! Passion Flower is therefore my lucky artwork! I see Passion Flower as a bold blending of geometric shapes, tulips and other flowers, a nod to the amazing mathematics and geometry of nature.
