Exhibitions & Readings

Nicole’s artwork has been on continuous exhibition for more than a decade, and often these exhibits include readings/exhibitions of her poetry and other writings.  Below is a slide show sharing photos of exhibitions, openings, media, licensed products, published books (poetry, philosophy, art, how-to and children’s books), parade floats, and much more.  In addition to the traditional slide show that follows, you might also enjoy Nicole’s “Memory Ball” – this whirling, twirling ball is a fun way to visually see how “Memories make the World go Round!”

M. Nicole van Dam art at Santa Barbara City Hall for Nearly a Decade

Artimagination : August 23, 2016 9:30 pm : Exhibitions, Nicole's News Hot Sheet

A great memory is having my art at Santa Barbara City Hall for almost a decade – from around 2006 until August 2016, encompassing several mayors and city council members over many years.  My artwork “Voting Booth” was the first thing a visitor to the Santa Barbara Mayor & City Council office would see when entering the office (see the artwork on the square wall). The artwork was accompanied by an explanation of what the art meant:

My “Tempo” Show Coming Soon at the iconic Ojai Art Center!

Artimagination : June 28, 2016 4:39 pm : Exhibitions, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Writer's Corner

I am thrilled and honored to have been asked to present a show featuring my writing and art at the lovely Ojai Art Center in July (Saturday July 23 at 2pm).  I will be sharing a blend of my art paired with my writing and other creations, largely based on my book, “Tempo – the Rhythm & Rhyme of the Artist.”  I also plan on bringing some of the lovely licensed products to share.  It will be fun to meet with the audience and share inspiration and learn from one another about life.  It was very meaningful to me to be recognized as an artist and writer in the lovely town of Ojai, with its many talented creatives!

Named One of 5 Creatives You Should Know

Artimagination : December 10, 2014 10:31 pm : Exhibitions, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet, Romantic Destinations, Scapes, Water Features

I just received the most FUN email today – I’ve been chosen as one of 5 “Creatives You Should Know” by the Creative Network Blog (sponsored by StudioVox). It’s such an honor – the article is so well written and includes four other wonderful artists. For my part of the article, the author chose to include my new “The Golden Gate” artwork and my fairly recent “Reading on the River Thales” artwork.

The Golden Gate

For “The Golden Gate” artwork I wanted to capture the picturesque San Francisco city scape along with the watery excitement and beauty that surround the famous Golden Gate Bridge.  I lived in San Francisco for a wonderful summer and still visit there with my husband when we get the chance.  The Golden Gate is my most recent work, so to have it chosen to be featured in the article is important to me and very meaningful.

Reading on the River Thales

The “Reading on the River Thales” artwork is my watery tribute to philosopher Thales of Miletus, whose theory was that all things contain water. Thales predates Aristotle (and was admired by Aristotle).   Thales was a true independent thinker and is often considered to be the first to attempt to explain the world around him without reference to mythology.   As a result, Thales is sometimes referred to as the father of science and the first true mathematician.  Since I admire independent thinkers, and Thales was apparently quite a courageous one, this artwork seems like a fun tribute.

Such fun to have both these artworks selected!  Here is a link to this lovely article, and thank you all for your support!

Fun fun fun! The rainboots with Nicole’s art were selected to be gifts given to the celebrities at the MovieGuide Awards, and it didn’t bother Nicole one bit to be referred to as a “modern day Monet.” Watch this video and share Nicole’s smiles!

Newly Released Limited Edition Artworks on Their First Exhibit

Artimagination : September 3, 2012 3:52 pm : Exhibitions, New Nicole Artworks, Nicole's News Hot Sheet

A few weeks ago, M. Nicole van Dam got another call for an exhibit of her artwork – since there are already so many exhibits of her artwork going on concurrently, this meant releasing a Limited Edition series for several of Nicole’s works: Lion’s Paradise, Bench at Giverny, Meubles de Jardin, and Nature’s Kitchen. Also on exhibit are Nicole’s popular Gondolier of Venice (accompanied by Nicole’s poetry) and Lake of Dreams (Le Lac de Reves)(also accompanied by poetry). On its second ever exhibition is Jester (selected by Nancy, the owner of Hip Vegetarian Restaurant, where the artwork is displayed – Nancy discovered Nicole’s artwork through Dr. Kenneth Kafka, a supporter of Nicole’s art). Sailing and Chef at the Farmer’s Market are also on display, both adding color and fun. Voting Booth is also on display, along with Nicole’s poem on politics and a writeup about the painting – perfect for this politcal season! Nicole also owes a BIG thank you to her ever-patient, supportive and wonderful hubby – who hung every painting in the exhibit with his expert eye! As background on Lion’s Paradise, this lively artwork was inspired by Ginni and Chad Dreier’s lovely Ginger and Chadwick lion exhibit at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Here are some photos of this latest exhibit:

Bank of America requests M. Nicole van Dam to Exhibit Artwork

Artimagination : August 22, 2012 5:07 pm : Exhibitions, Nicole's News Hot Sheet

Bank of America contacted Nicole recently asking her to once again display her art – and here are the photographs – the pieces currently exhibited at Bank of America include the ever-popular “Summer Afternoon,” “Cello Fantasy,” “Voting Booth,” “It’s Spring,” “Flowers & Song,” “Country Rose,” and “Flower Celebration.”  Nicole also included a write-up of “Voting Booth,” and we decided to display that photo right above the bank’s community board – seemed appropriate for voting season!  Many thanks to Bank of America for their continuing support of M. Nicole van Dam artworks.  Currently Nicole’s art is on display at more than 6 public venues, which is an unusual accomplishment for most artists.  Nicole also just received a request for another new exhibit to start on September 2, so details on that upcoming exhibit to follow shortly.

"Summer Afternoon" adds some banking cheer

"Cello Fantasy" adds some artistic flair to serious business

"Voting Booth" fittingly displayed right above the Bank of America Community Board

We guess Nicole's art must be pretty safe here, by the safety deposit banks!

This morning I met wonderful, ever-patient and supportive (and excellent musician) Debbie at Santa Barbara’s beautiful and historic City Hall, and we added my “Lake of Dreams” and “Mission at Santa Barbara” artworks to join “Voting Booth” and “Summer Afternoon” there. I hope you enjoy the pictures – I forgot to bring a camera but thankfully Debbie had her cell phone! What did we do before cell phones?

I took a quick video:

THANK YOU SANTA BARBARA FOR ALL YOU’VE DONE FOR MY ART!

In 2017 I was asked to read two of my works for television broadcast – very fun indeed! I chose two works that had a reference to knitting, in honor of my Mother and my Aunt and cousins, all of whom encouraged my exploration of the diverse world of knitting. When I did the readings, I wore my Dance of the Fall Leaves kaftan, based on my Dance of the Fall Leaves artwork. One of the readings was of a short story I wrote, “Nessie.” I had fun juxtaposing the traditional with the modern with the futuristic. This reading was broadcast on television 5 times in 2017 and has enjoyed some nice internet exposure:

Here is another of my readings broadcast on television – my poem “Life is Like Knitting.” Following is the video of the reading, and below the video I have put the poem itself.

As background on the poem itself, I had written about knitting, and life, some years ago, when I was starting anew before I met my wonderful husband. Knitting was a lovely part of my relationship with my Mother and also with my wonderful Aunt Barbara and her daughters Rika and Claire. The poem is apropos of so many of life’s changes and decisions:

Life is Like Knitting

Life is like knitting
Sometimes each stitch falls easily into place
Each row upon row flowing with grace
And then, a mistake, not easy to erase

A choice must be had
Do we go ahead flawed, looking a bit bad
Or do we unravel and then
Begin, begin, begin again?

With each new start
The old design deliberately picked apart
Carefully the yarn from the needle unfurls
Undoing all the knits and pearls
Cautious not to harm
The tender texture of the yarn

This life’s thread must be used to stitch again
In our universal pattern of row upon row, til time’s end
There is no shame in each start anew
No matter how many restarts or how few

The rows undone
In the redoing are part of life’s fun
The lessons learned along each knitted way
Can be used another day
To last, to warm our souls a little longer
Making our life’s knitting that much stronger.
