Art Nouveau Lady

Art Nouveau Lady

Art Nouveau Lady

Art Nouveau Lady, created in 2014, was inspired by the lovely works featuring women by Alfonse Mucha and Erte.  It is intended to be an elegant blend of the art nouveau and art deco styles, with a bit of my own Impressionist flair, as well as a respectful nod to the creativity of Mucha and Erte.   I wanted to the roses to be pink and beautiful in a balanced and yet symmetrically unsymmetrical composition!  I had fun with the art nouveau and art deco geometric patterns.

What Home Made Compost Looks Like When You’re Finished, and How to Use it!

I was invited to a lovely tea today and saw the sweetest garden, filled with creativity and whimsy. We came to the subject of composting and what finished compost should look like when it’s ready to use. It’s basically black and full of happy, well-fed worms! This is what a scoop of my home made compost – aka “Garden Gold” – looks like (and all the brown things are worms!):

Finished Home Made Compost is black and FULL of worms - this is just one scoop of many!

This compost is GREAT for my organic vegetable garden, for my fruit trees, for my roses, for all my flowers (other than orchid type flowers). To use the finished compost, this is what I do:

I go to a plant or bed or fruit tree to which I wish to add compost, and gently (so as not to disturb any roots), using a small hand rake, rake the existing soil so it is loose. The hand rake I use is technically called a “composite cultivator.” Here is the sort of three pronged hand rake that I use:

Once I’m through prepping the site by loosening the existing soil with the hand rake, then I go to the composter and with a big scoop, I scoop out (again, very gently so as not to hurt the worms) a generous scoop of compost. Here is the garden scoop I use:

I take this garden scoop full of my “Garden Gold” (home made compost) and I carefully walk it to the soil around the fruit tree/garden bed/etc. that I just hand prepped with the hand raking. I then carefully sprinkle the compost on top of the existing just raked soil. I make sure the watering system goes on for about 8 minutes around 12 hours later, and that’s it! It’s that easy! -And the results are truly wonderful!

Tip: Wait with bringing over the scoop of compost until you have the garden soil prepped with the hand rake, or you will find your worms escaping!

Reminder:  Click this link to find my earlier post on how to make compost. If you’re new to composting, make sure you read this – it has helpful hints like advising that you purchase a tumbling composter – that will make your life easier! Here are examples of tumbling composters:

While working in the garden inspires me, I haven’t added any worms to my artwork that I can remember. I did text the photo of the scoop full of worms to my Mother though 😉

Creativity Beyond the Canvas

I have discovered that it is so refreshing – INSPIRING – to work with other creative people. My advice to any artist who feels burned out is to have some fun working with another creative person on an entirely different type of project. It really rejuvenates the soul and makes for some great memories. For example, I have discovered I so enjoy writing lyrics. My first musical collaboration was because of the kindness and talent of Robin Frost, an international, award winning composer. Robin elected to put my poetry to music – working side-by-side with Robin in his amazing studio are some of my happiest memories. I owe quite a bit of my musical courage to him! Following is an example of one of our first bits of creative fun together. Robin Frost used my lyrics “House Cleaning Rag” to write the following ragtime song (and you can hear I won’t win any awards for my singing)!

I have been so lucky to enjoy a few musical collaborations with brilliant musician Dr. Kenneth Kafka – here is an example of the wonderful music Dr. Kafka wrote for my “Moonlight” lyrics:

Another wonderful memory was being a professional narrator (along with Dominic Byrne, a well-known BBC personality and narrator) for my children’s book, “Inca Dink, the Great Houndini.” I even took a photo of my Leonberger dog Inca with me to the recording studio, for inspiration. Here is an excerpt:

Please visit IncaDink.com to learn more.

Creativity comes in more forms too! I am helping to design a cell phone app – that really gets the brain working in other ways! It’s very inspiring to see the genius creative software engineer at work, and maybe much more fun than you might expect. More on that in a later post!

New Fun on the Horizon: I just finished writing the lyrics for an entire musical! It will be awhile before the final product is available to the world at large – but stay tuned! Please visit TuneSmith.bz to learn more.

Butterfly Magic!

We were taken to a magical butterfly adventure at Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale – so worth seeing! Kudos to Butterfly Wonderland for making such a great, beautiful and educational butterfly sanctuary. There are many volunteers there that teach you things as you stroll the butterfly gardens. Some even walk around with foam paintbrushes filled with sap that the butterflies sit on and drink – just so unusual! You can see butterflies hatching from cocoons, huge blue butterflies, moths as big as a human head, so many things! There is also an educational video of the migration of the Monarch that is very well done and shows what a triumph of nature these Monarchs are. It takes three generations of Monarchs to make the Eastern migration, and you learn all about the third SUPER generation of Monarch. Makes you wonder if people ever get super generations, but that’s another story… I also learned quite a bit about butterfly favorite flowers to plant to help the butterflies survive, as the super agriculture farms that plant all one crop spell disaster for the butterflies. We can all plant some butterfly favorites (like milkweed!) to help them on their way. If you look at the plants in the videos you’ll see some that likely can grow in your area. Here are some videos taken of this lovely place, to entice you to visit yourself….

Nature really is AMAZING and magical and wondrous!

Below is a painting I created several years ago, “Butterfly Woman” – it has been licensed for glass plates – I think it might be time for me to paint another butterfly painting!

September Creativity Central ROCKS!

At our September Creativity Central we had a fun musical treat – live rock ‘n roll music generously and superbly performed by Kenneth G. Halverson Jr.  That means we got to jam as we created to some great music – some of it original music written and sung by Kenneth Halverson, and some if it favorites that Kenneth Halverson gave great performances of.  AWESOME!  At the same time, we worked on some creativity – we made a gift kite as a group and we made some very fun yarn ‘pom pom’ critters.  Enjoy the pictures of this very special Creativity Central session:

On Hounds, Crop Report and More

It’s been too long since my last post – we’ve had harvests of tomatoes, grapes, a few cherries, strawberries, apples, and Asian apple pears. Our doughnut peach tree has hundreds of green peaches, so looking forward to a luscious harvest, even taking into account the usual tithing to birds and squirrels. Our grape vine never gave us (or the birds) so many grapes. Speaking of birds, we have Black Headed Grosbeaks again, along with a Hooded Oriole and its mate (the male is quite flashy, we call him Scuba). There are wonderful hummingbirds who love the old oaks as well as the bougainvillaea and morning glories, and of course Mercury (the Blue Jay) and his mate, and many more wonderful species of birds.

Back on the plant front, I went to my girl friend’s house and was amazed at how lovely her vegetable garden was. Everything grows in tidy but bountiful humps. Loads of tomatoes, peppers, squash, lettuce, but all so NEAT, so tidy. My garden seems to grow vertically – I suspect our large trees, and now the grape vine that encircles (and embraces) the vegetable garden, all combine to give too much shade. Even though the tomato plants are a bit stalky, the yield is pretty good. I’ve discovered that I love the ‘Sweet 100’ cherry tomatoes best this year. We’ve had some raspberries, strawberries, but the blue berries are struggling a bit. My husband ran a hose down to the vegetable garden so that helps me keep the bird bath clean (and now I have no excuse to not rinse my harvest before I nibble on it in the garden!). We’ve added some lovely new trees this year – another pummelo, tangerine, lemon, Fuji apple, and doughnut peach. The Asian Apple Pears are producing a bit this year, that’s a juicy treat! My watermelon and corn once again didn’t make it. There are eggplants starting, so that is promising. The fig tree has a nice crop of figs starting, those make lovely desserts. The garden stars are clearly the original doughnut peach, which has hundreds of peaches, all green still, and the grape vine, which has hundreds of fat bunches of red flame seedless grapes – YUM. Nothing like homegrown.

A most exciting development is something new I learned – how to root a branch that broke off of my Asian Apple Pear tree – I’ll do a separate post on how I did that, but for now I want to note that I’m excited that this little twig just entered phase 3 – phase one was getting the twig to survive and phase two was getting the twig to grow roots, and now phase 3 is that I’ve re-potted and planted this heroic rooted sprig outside in a larger (and less protected) environment – if this sprig makes it then in a mere five years (or more) I’ll have Asian apple pears on it. What a thrill that will be! The adventure of course is learning how to grow life out of what otherwise might have been discarded. As background, the branch that broke off the Asian Apple Pear broke because it was so over laden with fruit that it couldn’t carry the weight. More detail on this Asian Apple Pear learning adventure to come in a later post.

Other fun developments include the first ever avocado on a particular avocado tree (took a few years) and the first plums on an old plum tree that had been nearly destroyed by lack of water before we purchased the property. It’s nice to see the old lady make a come back! A garden expert had actually recommended that I remove it – but I couldn’t bear to, I wanted to give it a chance! The garden is my haven, my sacred spot. All seems so good here, everything growing, everything happy, everything peaceful. The birds and squirrels and dogs all get along. -And the dogs – the wonderful dogs – such good gardening companions. here are some fun pictures, more to come soon!

Making Garden Gold: How to Compost

So pretty and peaceful in the veggie garden!

Nicole has happily been composting for her organic garden- which she loves because it eliminates so much waste that otherwise would be lost in a landfill, and turns everything from coffee grinds, eggshells, and unwanted veggie leftovers into precious nourishment for the plants. After quite a bit of research Nicole chose a tumbling composter, and liked it enough to purchase a second one. UPDATE: The exact composter Nicole uses has been discontinued (bummer!). Here is what our bins look like:

What our compost bins look like - what a shame they were discontinued!

We did some research and here are links to compost bins similar to ours:

The yield on Nicole’s fruit trees has increased considerably since the composting began! For those curious the products Nicole uses for composting are here

Steps:

STEP ONE: Buy a tumbling compost bin, such as the bin at the above link. Whatever bin you choose, you want it to have removable lids on both sides that don’t open by accident, and you want it to be a tumbling composter so you don’t need to heave through it with a shovel. Much easier/tideier to give the composter a spin than to plow through the muck with a shovel! What we like about this composter is that it has a 4-angle locking system – meaning that in between tumbles, you can pose the composter horizontal or vertical, so that it warms in the sun to the maximum. Both ends have lids that lock securely.

STEP TWO: Buy a small box of compost starter – you won’t need much – only a few cupfuls for the bin Nicole uses. Nicole recommends this compost starter: The compost starter Nicole used.

STEP THREE: Start thinking about your possible composting materials as either “brown material” or “green material”.

BROWN MATERIAL: Woody stalks of plants, coffee filters, shredded black and white newspaper (avoid color paper because sometimes the color inks can be toxic), wood chips (if you get your trees trimmed, ask the tree trimmer to give you the wood chips from their chipper – plan ahead and have a spare garbage bin for it), old leaves (even pine needles in moderation), sawdust, hay, straw, even dryer lint (caution with dryer lint – I don’t use it because I’m worried about residue from the color dyes) . The word “brown” has nothing to do with color, it has to do with the carbon that will be released.

GREEN MATERIAL: green grass clippings or freshly fallen leaves (still green), vegetarian table scraps like fruit rinds, leftover fruit, left over vegetables, old bread, even eggs shells (I wash off the egg shells), coffee grinds, tea leaves (can be in tea bag, remove staples), hair (yes, even dust bunnies from your dog!). The word “green” has nothing to do with color, it has to do with the nitrogen that will be released.

WHAT TO AVOID: Never add in any non-vegetarian table scraps like dairy products, meat, fish, bones, or any part of an egg (other than cleaned egg shells). Never add in any diseased or insect laden plants – you will only spread the problem when you spread the compost! Never add in things that are weedlike – like ivy, dandelions, quackgrass – that also will only increase your chances of spreading weeds! Never add in your dog or cat waste. Don’t add in anything treated with insecticides.

STEP FOUR: When you add materials to your composter, based on my experience, volume-wise you want to roughly add in TWO PARTS GREEN MATERIAL (i.e., coffee grinds, tea, kitchen scraps from fruits and veggie (even the rinds and peels), and grass clippings) TO EVERY ONE PART BROWN MATERIALS (i.e., coffee filter, old black and white newspaper, dead brown leaves, wood chips, woody stalks of plants). You can experiment with up to four parts one to one part the other. Here’s how to tell if you have the right ratio ‘sun cooking’ in your composter: If you open the lid and it smells rotten then you have too much green material and need to add brown material; if you open the lid and it seems nothing is happening and it isn’t making compost, then (assuming you’ve been turning the composter and it is standing in the sun and isn’t too dry), then that likely means you have too much brown and need to add green. The right ratio of compost actually smells sweet!

STEP FIVE: To start your composter composting:
1. Make sure you locate your composter in a full sun location. Locate the composter BEFORE you fill it up!
2. Fill in the composter at least one quarter full with two parts green to one part brown materials, and then add a fat two cups of the compost starter, then add two fat cups of water, give your composter the first few spins. The most you want to fill your composter is 3/4 full.
3. Collect your green and brown materials every day and keep adding to the composter in roughly the two-to-four green to one brown ration, and spin the composter a few times every time you add new material. Regardless of whether you add new material, you should spin the composter every few days, and in around two-to-six months (depending on how hot your area is) from when you added your last material, you will have lovely compost!
4. Once your compost looks like soil – you can’t distinguish any particular material in it, then you’ve successfully made your first batch of what I call ‘garden gold’ and you are ready to sprinkle your garden gold around your plants, and to start the composting process all over again.

IMPORTANT: Once your composter is 3/4 full, stop adding new materials, but keep spinning the composter and once every few weeks add a cup of water if it seems dry. If your composter is full but you don’t want to waste your table scaprs in the meantime, that means you need to buy a second composter (that’s what I did), so you have your composters composting at alternate times.

Handy Hint: We keep a small bucket in our kitchen that came with its own lid – that bucket stays in our kitchen, and we fill it with whatever vegetarian scraps, waste, etc. we want to compost, then carry the bucket into the garden when it’s full and dump it into the composter. That’s a neat solution that’s handy and not messy or gross to look at! Here is a link to the sort of bucket that can work: Kitchen bucket for composting.

M. Nicole van Dam has written a unique thinking and talking points guide for the entrepreneur, “SuperQuick® Savvy Business Thinking Points & Interviews,” now available in paperback.

As background, the best way to explore the steps you (or your audience) need to think about in developing your own business, is to learn from the trials and triumphs of others who ultimately have achieved success. The good news is, successful people generously willing to share their wisdom are all around us. In fact, everyone you meet has an interesting history – wonderful experience, lessons to share – and this book outlines some questions that will help you find the gift of wisdom that is within each individual. SuperQuick® Savvy Business Thinking Points & Interviews provides enjoyable and fruitful conversation, interview and conference panel moderation guidance that will also enhance your own business planning process. This book is a great interview, Q&A and Conversational get-to-know guide for Entrepreneurs, Memoir Writers, and Educators and Conference Facilitators, and an excellent way for any entrepreneur to prepare for meetings with investors, and for any business speaker to prep for an upcoming speaking engagement. As a teacher of entrepreneurship and innovation, M. Nicole van Dam brought industry leaders, innovators, funders and investors, including successful entrepreneurs and CEOs – collectively representing more than a billion dollars in net worth each semester – to share their wisdom with her entrepreneurship and innovation classes. The fact that this was possible is a testimony to the generosity of these wonderful guest lecturers. Most of these guest lecturers participated in Nicole’s classes semester after semester, which was a great gift to each student. In order to make the most of the guest lecture experience for her students, Nicole, using her own MBA/JD expertise and experience in the field, over time developed these specialized interview questions and Q & A thinking points. Because of the many requests for Nicole’s interview outlines and business thinking points, Nicole has published this “SuperQuick® Savvy Business Thinking Points & Interviews” book.
