Rare Bird Sighting – A Black-Headed Grosbeak is Wintering in Our Garden!

Rare Sighting of Male Black-Headed Grosbeak Wintering in CA - here he is hanging out on the step, watching the view.

We have been seeing what for us was a most unusual looking bird – and it turns out there is a reason for that. This little fellow is a black-headed grosbeak, and he is supposed to spend the winters in Central Mexico or Latin American, not here by the Central Coast in California. There is a likely, sad reason for him wintering here – he has a wing that hangs down too far, and it probably made the winter migration too hard for him. He visits our bird feeder several times a day. The great folks at Cornell Lab of Ornithology told me there is nothing that I can do to keep him warm – luckily they can fluff up their feathers to do that. Here too is a photo of our local Blue Jay – he is a spunky fellow, delightful in his own right:

Spunky Blue Jay

Here is a video of him taking turns with our local Blue Jay at the bird feeder – very polite these two! I guess they can’t figure our who’s bigger so they’re sharing!

Inspiring Escapes

Here are some lovely photos from our October Creativity Central, where we worked more on our dioramas and shared some of our past projects. Each diorama represents a secret haven for each participant, that we can visit just by opening the box! First we did a Q&A to help define what our respective “haven” might be, and then we created them in 3D! Here are the amazing results:

Allyson hard at work on her diorama:

Allyson working on her fun diorama

As you look at Allyson’s diorama below, see the luscious folds of the scarf that Allyson wove herself. These folds make up the sea floor along the bottom of Allyson’s box. See also the lace she made herself, that has become the “contrail” of the gold airplane. The airplane you see soaring inside is gold foil wrapped around the clay plane that Allyson made by hand last time. On the left side of Allyson’s diorama are secret wooden Japanese letters with special meaning for her and her husband. Allyson wanted her diorama to show movement, and it sure does!

Allyson's Diorama - Full of Movement and beautiful handmade elements.

Another Creativity Central participant, Joanie, shared her magical diorama, below:

Joanie's Magical Diorama

See the gorgeous handmade papers on the box exterior, and family photos and other lovely elements, so artistically and meaningfully arranged by Joanie, within. The colors and textures are gorgeous!

I also want to show off Joanie’s AWESOME necklace form a prior Creativity Central class – it is so beautiful!

Today’s Harvest!

Today's Harvest - grape tomatoes, colorful Swiss chard, fresh basil

It was glorious in the garden today – a slight cool breeze, warm sun on the shoulders, just wonderful.  I harvested a cheery pile of colorful rainbow Swiss chard, sweet grape tomatoes, and aromatic fresh basil.  Tonight I’ll saute it all together with a little olive oil, chopped onion, a tiny bit of garlic, sea salt, pepper, pomegranate balsamic, and a squeeze of lime juice and…. YUM!  It’s good ‘eatins tonight!

Our Princess Bourke lays FOUR eggs, and another GLORIOUS day in the Garden!

First, the big and yet not big news.  Our little Bourke parrot has laid four eggs, and she is quite proud to show them off.

Princess Bourke shows off her 4 eggs while I am swapping out her nesting tissue box

Of course these eggs are all unfertilized, so her quest to hatch them is sadly hopeless, but she is nonetheless quite beautiful in her steadfast determination.  I am certain there is a metaphor about life in all this, but I need another cup of coffee to noodle it out 🙂  In case you’re curious, using a tissue box for a disposable nest was the bird vet’s idea (Santa Barbara Cat & Bird Clinic – they are geniuses over there).  Our Bourke parrot (aka Bourke parakeet)  is so sweet that she just lets me lift her eggs from the old box to the new one with complete trust.  I love this little bird!  Our male bird, who has a separate cage (but the two cages sit side-by-side so they can keep each other company), whistles and chatters to her all day long.  They get along great, these two, and are a source of joy every day.  I’ve never had birds before, and never liked the idea of keeping things in cages, but these two birds are fully flighted and get their time out, and actually fly back to their cages on their own when they’ve had enough of time with “their monkeys.”

Best Buddies

Side-by-side Villas

On a different note, the mornings are so beautiful here.  I just took a stroll in the gardens, and …. the corn is still there!!!

The corn is tempting - not just to me but to the raccoons!

A few of the ears are so close to being ready, that I was tempted to snag one before the gopher/raccoon/corngremlin gets them, so I at least have one!  -But I didn’t – something I hope I don’t regret by tomorrow morning!

Here are some other photos from the stroll, as well as a few pictures of today’s harvest:

Some of today's harvest - I will sautee that lovely rainbow chard with the freshly harvested shallots and basil - YUM!

I will probably let the artichokes go to blossom - they get gorgeous blue flowers!

Pictures from May 31 Creativity Central!

Our next Creativity Central is scheduled for this Monday, June 20 at 6-8pm! Here are some photos from the last Creativity Central – and I have to say, nothing could be more fun and lively than the two fabulously creative, smart and engaging children that joined us with their Mom! When I asked the little boy what he was making, at one point he answered…DNA! -and then in response to the kids questions, we got onto the subject of Einstein’s theory of relativity and how light travels – happily I was saved from this tough line of questioning thanks to a great explanation by our resident genius Jay.  Who knew this was Creativity AND SCIENCE Central! You never know what will happen at these meetings! We all loved these two kids, and their presence was a joyous gift to the group!

Two of the most fun kids EVER!

Swan Duet

Swan Duet
Inspired by the lifelong love between swan mates, and the heart created by their profiles when they meet.  I was so happy that this artwork was purchased by a home where true love dwelt!  The heart that the swans make when they meet is enlarged and emphasized by the roses and water lilies and other flowers that surround them.  I love the soft billowy feathers of the swans and the romantic colors of this artwork.

Blissfully Peacefully Perfect Moments in the Garden this Morning

It was just lovely in the garden this morning.  Birds all a-twitter, my 120 pound Leonberger and 10 pound Chihuahua/Pomeranian/Papillion happily and comically by my side – you can’t look at these two dogs together and NOT smile:

There Must be Mischief Somewhere!

Is that Squirrel talking to me?

Follow Me! Follow Me! Exploring the lesser used paths for adventure!

The garden itself was full of wonderful surprises:

How could Monet NOT paint these?

Apples on the Apple Tree

Apricots on the Apricot Tree

Strawberry Abundance in the Berry Box

Gorgeous Swiss Chard - No wonder they call it "Rainbow Lights" chard!

Corn not quite as high as an elephant's eye (not even an elephant's knee!)

Matillija Poppies dancing with the Morning Glories!

Mysterious Looking Eggplants with their dark, broodish leaf accents

The Garden's First Ever Raspberries (we hope!)

Grapes on the Vine! Red Flame Seedless! YUM!

Another look at those Red Flame Seedless Baby Grapes!

Neat Little Happy Rows, That's How the Garden Grows!

So Peaceful in the Morning!

First-Ever Cherries on the Cherry Tree!

Year 2 for the Pomegranate Tree looks Promising!

Each of our Heirloom Tomato Plants has Flowers!

Recipe for the Morning:

In a small bowl add in a few eggs and whip them with a fork.  Set aside for the moment, and then put a little oil in a nonstick skillet, grill up some frozen chopped onions (the lazy gal’s way for onions!), add in a little chopped garlic from a jar (found in the grocer’s fresh produc section – these are invaluable) and a SMALL amount of fresh ginger from a jar (also from the grocer’s fresh produce section).  Add in a little fresh ground pepper (a few cranks worth on your small pepper grinder), fresh basil from the garden, and then add teh swiss chard and sautee away!

Once the swiss chard looks fully cooked, remove the chard from the skillet, and then in its place add in the whipped eggs from the small bowl.  Cover over low heat, checking often (in about a minute start checking), and let the eggs form a pancake.  When the pancake looks firm add in the swiss chard, onions, etc blend that you set aside, plus (totally optional, not necessary) any of the following to taste: grated cheese, avocado.

Fold the omelette in two, tamp the halves of the omelette together just a wee bit, and let it heat just a minute or so more.  Remove and Voila!  -A lovely, simple, HEALTHY breakfast fresh from the garden!

Of course, don’t forget to serve with COFFEE!  That reminds me, I need a cup!

ENJOY!  Bon Apetite!

Harvested Swiss Chard for Breakfast. I'll sautee this with some basil from the garden and make an omelette, a LOVELY healthy start to the morning. With Coffee of course!

Latest Knitting Machine Developments

This weekend was the BIG weekend – out in Anaheim, California, thanks to Newton’s Yarn Country, there was a weekend long seminar and knitting machine show, and you can bet I was there!  Out on the parking lot, they were selling beautiful yarns, all different colors – it was one of those fun treasure hunts where you seek box to box to find enough of the colors you like.  How can you look at all these colors and not want to knit?

Glorious Colors! I want to try them all!

Also fun was to see what others had made using their “magic machines” – my teacher Ruth was there, sporting an amazing outfit that she designed and made herself – WOW!

Ruth's Amazing Outfit, Front and Back. Look at the lovely design in the front, and the elegant ribbing detail in the back - I want to be able to do this!

Also part of the fun was meeting Dorothy – she was a wealth of knowledge of (hurray!) PAINTING on knitting!  Here is a photo of my two favorite knitting machine gurus, Ruth and Dorothy:

My two favorite knitting machine creative gurus - Ruth and Dorothy!

While at the show, I was able to sit in on some very valuable demonstrations.  I saw Richard Smith create lace using the machine, and learned that to make lace on the machine you need to use both carriages – the lace carraige and the general carriage.  You can bet I went home and tried it!  In the photo below, the lace carriage is on the left.  Working both of these at once isn’t too hard – and actually I felt I got a bit of an upper body workout!

Lace Carriage and General Carriage of the "Magic Machine"

There were many other great seminars too, each instructor sharing their unique creative perspective.
-So I went home and re-set up the machines, this time for lace and two colors….

Thanks to my sweet Aunt and Uncle, I am well equiped!

-and then I jumped in and created!  I made lace and learned how to use two colors at once!  Here are some photos of what I made – these KnitKing machines are AMAZING!

Some of the Lace I created with some of the 2-color Knitwork

Close-up of the 2-color work - I can't believe I made this!

Here I inverted the color choices - the "Magic Machine" makes that easy!

My Sampler almost looks like a scarve!

-So that’s the update!  I’m thrilled, inspired, excited to do more. I’ve not even seriously begun to tap into the creative potential of these great machines!

Friday’s Creativity Central Colorful AND Musical!

Last Friday was a COLORFUL and MUSICAL Creativity Central.  Our project was to color in the clay creatures the Creativity Central group made at the prior meeting, and thanks to a fabulous donation of Copic Markers by the Copic Marker company (THANK YOU COPIC!!!), we had all the colors we needed!

Not only did we have visual color, we had MUSICAL color!  Dr. Kenneth Kafka once again donated his valuable time to the group, and played music for us, and WROTE music with us!  It’s amazing how he can craft a tune on the fly!

Generous gift from Copic Markers!

Not only did we have visual color, we had MUSICAL color!  Dr. Kenneth Kafka once again donated his valuable time to the group, and played music for us, and WROTE music with us!  It’s amazing how he can craft a tune on the fly!

Between the glorious music and the happy rich colors, for these moments we were lost in creating, and it was very special.  Here are some photos of some of our group working with the lovely Copic colors while Dr. Kafka played some truly amazing music.

Dr. Kafka joined in the color-creative fun too, so his artwork, as well as his musical inspiration, will now be a part of our final project!

Here is a photo of some of the amazing work Joanie did – she really brought this snake to life by putting light blue in the hatch marks on the snake’s back, and what a great choice of colors!  Great job Joanie!

Here is a photo of some of the beautiful pieces we created using the Copic Markers that were given to us by the generous donation of the Copic company:

This is a closeup of some of the detail our group was able to achieve using the versatile, easy-to-use Copic markers.

As a reminder, Nicole will be carefully applying these creations to the canvas we created a few sessions ago.  Here is an example of Dr. Kafka’s piece, and how it will look against the canvas – great work Dr. Kafka!

In addition to thanking Dr. Kafka and Copic markers for their generous contributions, we also need to thank Community Memorial Hospital for the incredible feast they provided for us!

Following is a Thank You card the group started for the Copic Marker company.  We really appreciate their gift of color!  Ashley worked very hard to get these colors to us on time – THANK YOU ASHLEY!

Please join us for our next Creativity Central session on Tuesday May 31 at 6pm – please call (805) 652-5459 to RSVP  🙂
