Bath for two?

Here are our sweet Bourke parakeets (aka Bourke’s Parrots) – our princess is in her bath and her prince decides to do whatever she does, but there’s no room for two.  She makes room for him and what happens?  Watch and see.  These two are really funny together!

Magical Rainbow!

My husband came in yesterday and took me by the hand, and raced me outside – and here is what we saw: A perfect rainbow!

A Perfect Rainbow!

Isn’t it interesting that seeing a rainbow makes us, for that moment, 5 years old again? Is it possible to see a rainbow and not be a bit awed by the magic of it all? – or wonder if there is a pot of gold at the end of it somewhere?

Here is a poem I wrote this morning, inspired by yesterday’s rainbow:

A Rainbow!
Full of hopes
Full of dreams
Every one knows what a rainbow means
Magic

This moment
Time is paused
Our eyes awed
Colorful beauty takes our breath away
Stand still

Make a wish
One for you
One for me
May our hearts’ memory ever see
Rainbows

I think my next artwork will have a rainbow in it 🙂

Had My First Knitting Machine Lesson!

I am so excited!

Smile! See the contrast between the first yellow "worms" I made on the knitting machine, shown here sitting atop the vastly improved orange knitting I did last night. That's something for me to SMILE about!

Ruth kindly came all the way up to the house and gave me my first KnitKing knitting machine lesson. She helped me set up the older machine so I could learn on it. Remember the yellow knit “worms” I made on my first solo attempt? NO MORE WORMS!

Here is what I learned:  First, the spongebars on these knitting machines get used up, so I had ordered new ones.  Ruth helped me replace the sponge bar, and that was a large part of the problem that made the machine jam during my first solo attempt, I think.   I also learned more about setting the right tension for the yarn you are using.  Apparently the yellow yarn I was initially using was a bit too thick for the machine setting I chose (i.e., I had the tension set to too low a number – I was using a 4, it should have been maybe an 8!).  Ruth also brought me a casting comb that was a little easier to use – she kindly let me buy it from her as they don’t make these anymore.  (I do worry about falling in love with a hobby that might die due to lack of parts!).   After Ruth left, I cast on all by myself (smiles) and started playing with the pre-programmed patterns, tried four different patterns. By 1:30am (yes, after midnight!), I was zonked, but look at what I made! It’s still hanging on the machine, I want to try some more patterns and maybe even try changing colors. It was so fun! Ruth was a patient teacher, and I am so appreciative of my Aunt for believing in me and giving me such wonderful machines, yarns and supplies – WOW. A new lifetime hobby!

I still have ooodles to learn, about the ribber and color changers and winding yarn and programming my own designs! -Oh, and I better learn to follow a pre-existing pattern and increase and decrease stitches for necklines and sleeves and such first!   SUCH FUN! I love learning new things.   At least I can make monotone textured scarves now!

Closeup of what this Magic Machine can do! Look at that texture!

Another close-up - this is me knitting on the machine without using any pre-programmed textures. St. John's knits, watch out!

By 1:30AM, I was zonked and my "sampler" was touching the floor!

What a difference a lesson makes! Compare the yellow "early worm" to what I did after my lesson! HURRAY! THANK YOU RUTH!

Leonberger and Chihuahua-Pomeranian Meet Statue!

If you watch the whole set of 4 videos below you will see just how sweet these 100 pound-plus Leonberger dogs are, as my Leonberger ever so gently gets to know the “statue” that suddenly appeared by our fireplace. The Leonberger tries so hard to make friends and wake the statue up! The Chihuahua-Pomeranian-Papillion is jumping all over the camera trying to get my attention, but the video stays pretty steady, thankfully, although you will see the little dog bounce around here and there. ENJOY!

I’m Planted! All Veggie Boxes Full and Veggie-eutiful!

I’m thrilled! The gardener came today, armed with wire, soil, new sprinkler heads, and yippeee-I-oh! The last two vegetable boxes are repaired and planted. Here are some pictures. Note the corn for the raccoons and gophers – two varieties for them! -and enough romaine to feed an army of rabbits!  The marigolds are to ward off pests (seemed to work a bit last year).  I bought several varieties of romaine lettuce because it is my husband’s favorite, and he makes AWESOME salads, can’t wait!

I tried to rotate plants to different areas than last year, as I read it helps prevent disease.  Sadly, I think I violated the tomato code by putting some tomatoes in the same spot as I had tomatoes last year (makes illness more likely), but I ran out of room!  I need another veggie box!

Noteworthy: Since I bought so many baby heirloom tomato plants and ran out of room, not only did I plant these precious tomatoes in verboten areas of the veggie box (i.e., in the same spots as last year), but I also needed to plant the tomato plants a bit too close together.   So while each tomato plant is a different variety (I can’t wait for fruit), I fear I put them at risk for crowding and disease – Aaaaaaargh!  -But… how is it that FOUR veggie boxes is not enough room?  Plus, I don’t even have enough cages for all the tomatoes, so I need to trot off and find more tomato cages.

I know from the photo below it looks like there is lots of space for all the tomatoes, but last year the tomatoes took over, spilling over the fences and crowding each other out.  I could barely walk the pathways between the veggie boxes.  Therefore, this pledge:  This year I PLEDGE TO TIMELY TRIM THE TOMATOES!

Doesn’t Look Crowded Now but wait til these Tomatoes Take Over! I Pledge to Trim them this year – REALLY!
Enough Romaine Lettuce for an Army of Rabbits! -and Swiss Chard too!
So Pretty and Cozy! I Love it out here!

It’s hard to believe this is my third year with this veggie garden.   I started out asking the gardener to build one box, and then quickly changed my mind and asked him to build two boxes.  By year two I had asked him to add in boxes three and four! I’m already contemplating box 5!  I don’t know where all the space goes!

Ok – I admit it – I’m Cheating!

Virtually everything in my veggie garden last year, I planted from seeds using the Park Seed “Biodome” – and we had a nice harvest, no complaints – in fact the gophers and raccoons found the corn especially yummie! As I mentioned in prior posts, this year I planted several seeds directly into the first veggie bed.  As a result there are already several young sprouts, all of which young sprouts seemingly survived a harsh late frost the last several nights – even BETTER than last year’s sprouts grown using the Biodome (sorry Park Seed!).

Nonetheless, with two beds still needing both repairs & new soil (repairs scheduled for this Tuesday, hurray, FINALLY!), it just will be too late (I think) to plant seedlings straight from seeds into the two remaining veggie beds, so I BOUGHT SOME STARTER VEGGIE PLANTS AT THE LOCAL NURSERY!

Feeling like a gardening slaggard at falling so far behind on my veggie gardens, I slunk into Ojai’s “Flora Gardens” to buy my starter plants for the two remaining veggie beds.  Soon my guilt was gone as I saw all the other veggie gardeners there! I loved listening to them talk about what varieties they had tried, and was helped by Flora Garden’s nice Caroline and Jodie.  My cozy experience at Flora Gardens made me think that perhaps BUYING the starter plants, as opposed to planting them from seed, at a minimum was far more social and fun!

While I was at Flora Gardens, I asked Caroline for a Black Krim tomato, and then Caroline told me about the upcoming “TOMATOMANIA!’ where hundreds of varieties of heirloom tomato plants would be available, first come first served. You can bet I went to TomatoMania! too, and came home with 11 different luscious heirloom tomato varieties. The TomatoMania! was so well set up – all varieties in alphabetical order, with nice large photos of the actual tomatoes the plant would bear, along with the plants names, in readable large print. I was helped, as it turned out, by the fellow whose hard work orchestrates TomatoMania! all over the country – Scott Daigre. If one of these comes near you – GO! (TomatoMania! event schedule at TomatoMania.com ).  It is really cool, really fun. Of course, the tomato plants offered for sale are quite small, and I asked Scott if I would have tomatoes by tomorrow.  He laughed, and then I said, “What, aren’t these like chickens that lay eggs every day?”

All jokes aside, here are some photos of my purchases and an update of photos of the sprouts planted from seed directly into the first veggie beds.  My purchases include romaine lettuce of various varieties, sweet basil, tomatoes (and more tomatoes!), one beautiful six pack of Swiss Chard in case my seedlings don’t make it, and of course some corn for the gophers and raccoons! It would be so nice if they let me have at least one ear of corn this year!

Plants waiting outside for me to move into the veggie boxes

Romaine Lettuce Mix and sweet basil six packs

Last year a sweet baby matillija poppy grew just to the point before it was to blossom its amazing large white flowers with yellow centers, and then a gopher (grrrr) got it – and now the matillija (hopefully minus gopher!) is back this year to try again to take root! I have run a separate little sprinkler to it, let’s hope it makes it to blossom this year!

Wild Matillija returns for second year!

little spinach and chard sprouts

Well-protected Mango made it through the frosts

Little baby grapes on the vine! Red Flame Seedless!

Can't beat these Beets! Golden Beets!

Aragula growing like crazy, frost or no frost!

The plants I bought at the Tomato Mania event I brought indoors to beat the unseasonal frost.  Amazingly all the baby sprouts from seeds already in the first veggie bed all made it through the frosts!

Crop Report April 4!

It’s so wonderful to go to the garden – this is the most exciting time – new little sprouts seemingly by the moment.  First I checked the veggie box I planted a few days ago.  I noticed that it was a bit hard to decide what was a sprout verses a weed.  How is it those pesky weeds grow so fast?

It can be hard to tell the weed from the sprout!

However some of the sprouts even I could find:

Swiss Chard Sprout hard to miss!

Even I can't mistake a sprout if it leads to the sign!

Aragula amazing! Can it really grow this fast?

I checked the berry box too – lots of fun things to see there:

First Blueberries! Can't Wait!

Thriving Strawberries - and see the Spider's Web in dew!

A walk around the garden paths yielded more nice surprises and developments:

First blossoms on the Asian Apple

Maybe our "self-fertilizing" Bing will have cherries this year! Hope so!

New Apple budding on our hybrid grafted apple tree!

No evidence that Mr. and Mrs. Kiwi have actually met yet!

Our wonderful, super athletic, agile Leonberger dog atop one of his watchful posts!

Close-up of our Leonberger dog. He's WONDERFUL!

One of our garden paths - leading to a Jasmin laden trellis. Along this path are the bing cherry and a second apple tree, as well as an abundant hybrid/multi-grafted ctirus. So peaceful! I love it here!

Knitting Machine Adventure Continues – I’ve made Worms!

Thanks to my husband, the knitting machine is now set up! Here is what it looks like, kind of like a muscial keyboard for knitting:

Knitting Machine set-up and waiting!

It’s more than a bit intimidating – here is a closeup up of all the buttons on different parts:

Intriguing Buttons and Dials on the "Carriage" - I've played with these!

-and here is a closeup of the computerized part of this knitting machine – I haven’t played with any of these yet!  Better get the basics first!

Closeup of some of the computer buttons of the knitting machine

From this grand machine I have now generated four rolled-up first attempts at ‘casting-on” – I call these little yellow rolls my worms!

Close-up of my very first "worm" on the machine needlebed

Little Worms on Knitting Machine!

Happily many of these mystery buttons should be cleared up soon – Ruth, an experienced machine knitter recommended by my Aunt, has agreed to come give me my first lesson April 19! She is kindly driving quite a way to do it. So much to learn – I can’t wait!

Miracle Basil Seeds & Today’s Citrus Harvest – No April Fool’s Prank!

Unbelievably, after posting yesterday that I would need to buy some basil seeds, I went through my mail and there, in a Sunset magazine letter asking me to subscribe, was a packet of Basil seeds!  If they grow well, Sunset magazine may well get my subscription!  (Of course, if I subscribe, does that mean they won’t send me seeds to lure me in next year?)  -So this morning I planted the miracle basil seeds, and there were enough seeds to make 4 tidy little rows of basil hope.  If none of the basil seeds sprout, the joke is on me!

On our garden path to the veggie garden is my amazing, prolific, sweet citrus hybrid, that has all sorts of citrus grafted onto one plant.  Since so many of the fruits looked ripe, I decided to harvest them and WOW – all sorts of oranges and tangerines, a great April Fools harvest!  I tried TWO and both so juicy, and one was incredibly beyond sweet (we won’t mention the other one!).  Here is a picture of the harvest, minus the two that didn’t last til photo shoot time:

Here is wishing all of you a lovely April 1, and may your mailbox fill with whatever seeds you need!  It’s so much better to find seeds in the mail rather than bills!

The Veggie Garden is BEGUN!

It can be delayed no longer – in fact already I am late. Time to face the overgrown wilderness that once was my veggie garden. The first step is to arm myself with the requisite tools – seeds, markers, pens, a little hand spade and of course… coffee!

Can this hodgepodge of things a garden make?

Onward down my lovely beckoning garden path to the garden. The sun is shining, and I am happy to be out again.  I truly am uncertain as to what I will find there, but had the foresight to have the gardener do an intial clearing a few weeks ago, before all the rains came again.  What I find confirms my suspicions – fueled by the rain the garden is once again overgrown, overrun, but all in all, a delightful canvas awaits this novice veggie gardener’s paint brush:

Poor dandelion – this is the one part of gardening I don’t like much – choosing some things to die so that others might thrive.

These leeks somehow survived the winter, as did a few carrots and the artichoke is now on year 3!  These surviviors make a nice running start to this year’s veggie garden 🙂

First I start clearing things by hand – debris flying.  Little T decides to play it safe and hide under the garden stool:

It’s time to take out the “heavy equipment!”

In the process I discover 2 beds are in need of repair before I plant them.  Those will be the beds for the corn, sugar snaps, sunflowers and possibly more arugalah and kale.  It’s a bit disappointing, because I am so late already, and it will be two weeks before my gardener comes again to make repairs.  Delaying the two beds does mean, however, that I have less work to do today!  The silver lining!

After a wee bit of huffing and puffing, all of which actually felt rather nice, the worst is done, and it’s time to plant the seeds.  Last year I started with an indoor seed germination kit, but this year I am gong to try straight into the soil, since I am late.  Last year I used only new seeds, this time I first use the remaining seeds from last year.  I admit  I am a bit concerned that these two rather significant changes (planting directly into soil and using older seeds) will result in less success, but it seems a shame to waste the seeds or not try at all being so late.

Big Leonberger dog T keeps a cautious watch on all the goings on:

Now that the debris isn’t flying anymore, Chihuahua Pomeranian Papillion Little T offers to help:

In any event, in the main bed I planted 3 different varieties of spinach, two rows of bright lights chard, kale, some golden beets, six tomatoes (red and yellow pear and a lovely heirloom mix including Krim)(a bit late on those ((sigh)), and arugulah (hubby’s favorite).

The other/second  bed not needing repairs is the “berry bed” – it already is full to the brim with blossoming strawberry plants from last year, a hearty raspberry, a blueberry and a blackberry.  I didn’t have much to do on this berry box but weed and thin.

I realize I need to buy some basil and pepper seeds to plant.  If I have any over from last year, I can’t find them (what a surprise!).

After veggie beds are done (at least for the day), I treat myself to two tangerines from our amazing hybrid citrus tree – it has several varieties of orange, tangerines, etc., in abundance:

I also enjoy the flowers all around me, and take note of the rest of the lovely garden.  The “Silver Cloud” ornamental tree (these are amazing) has begun to leaf and for the first time has little purple flowers.  The donut-peach tree is full of pink blossoms, as is are the young pummelo and ruby red grapefruit trees.  The asian apple and asian pear trees are beginning to bud – will we get fruit from them for the first time this year?  The main fig has big fat buds, and the youngest apricot tree boasts it first blossom, while the tow other mature apricots are full of flowers.  Most amazingly, our hybrid apple tree, that has many varieties of apples grafted to it, already has four little apples on it!  YUM!  It’s a beautiful time to be in the garden, and I feel thankful and blessed to be able to enjoy my garden again!

Coffee Coffee Coffeeeeeeeeeeeee!

COFFEEEEEEEEE!

It just so happens I LOVE COFFEE! Rarely do I create a painting or garden without a handy cup of coffee standing by, and of course my iPod playing tunes! I created a Coffee Carousel website with all my favorite coffees for each of our three (3!) coffee machines – enjoy at CoffeeHound.bz!

Here is a poem I wrote for my java habit:

Daily Ritual

Every morning
Sleepy out of bed
Tussled head
I stumble to the kitchen sink
Seeking one precious drink
Ever so slowly from my mug, sip by sip
Savoring every dark, rich drip
Precious nectar, warming heart and waking mind
That magic potion that fuels mankind…

Coffee

Wonderful Coffee
Warm Coffee
Aromatic
Sensatic
Irresistible to this java addict
Coffee.

Awed and Inspired

Last night we had another Creativity Central session at the hospital, and I need to say how talented these wonderful people are.  I am so impressed with all their beautiful creations, and it reminds me that my talent is not so unique – there is a LOT of talent out there.  I think I am learning as much from all this as they are!

I am excited about learning something new – KNITTING MACHINES!

My sweet Aunt gave me a whole room full of knitting machine equipment – I’m not sure where to start! I have visions of beautifully knit scarves, sweaters, and wall hangings, but something tells me I have a waaaay to go before anything great is produced. Nonetheless, for all my projects it is the finished result, glowing in rose-colored-glasses perfection – that keeps me motivated, and as I write this it occurs to me that envisioning the “finish line” might be what always keeps me motivated. Does that imply that I might not be enjoying the journey enough? Hmmmm! In any event, right now our spare room is full of knit machine goodies, now to noodle out how all this stuff works! Luckily my Aunt also gave me the name of a nice woman who knows this stuff, Ruth, and I am looking forward to hopefully hiring her to teach me. Stay tuned!

Last Night’s CreativityCentral Session WILDLY Fun!

Last night’s CreativityCentral session was a hoot!

(Owl by Gillian!)

We worked on the next phase of our “Jammin Jungle” project.  As a reminder, the background was painted in February.  This month we created the forms for the 3D animals and flowers.  Here are some photos of our wonderful group from last night – enjoy and be inspired!

We started with cookie cutter shapes of animals:

(Allyson starting with the cookie cutter)
-and then as always everyone got got creative, modified them, made them 3D, used all sorts of tools (and key chains and forks and measuring cups and anything we could find!).
(above and below) Melanie showing her mom Rose her impressive fork and other techniques.  What a great super-talented, super-fun Mother-Daughter team!
Gillian (photo above) demonstrating her rolling technique (and see her cute owl!), and smiling graciously for the camera (below)

Allyson hard at work (above)

Joan hard at work too (with a smile!)
-and Gillian (above) worked hard too – see the snake above she was working on – note the cross-hatch technique!
-But it wasn’t all hard work – in fact, there were lots of smiles:
(We won’t share what we were laughing about (above) on this one!)
From all this fun, came some wonderful creations:
Allyson’s Ape (above) with a heart, and her beautiful African flower

Gillian’s ‘Gator

Super Impressive work (above) by Melanie on her monkey’s face and clever bananas (see the photo insert above to see the results)

Joan’s lovely creations (above and below)

Melanie’s Creations (below):

Rose’s AMAZING tree (above)

Gillian’s Sweet bird (above) and some of her other creations (below):

Overall, the evening’s results were prolific AND beautiful!  We will have lots of lovely creatures and flowers to color in next session!

Most importantly, a cozy, fun time was had all by all!

The next step in our project will be for us to color in these lovely creations, after which we will adhere them to the canvas we painted as a group in February.
Please join us on Friday April 29 for our next CreativityCentral session – it should be a blast – not only will we work on this fun project, “The Jammin Jungle” – but also my dear friend Dr. Kenneth Kafka will once again wow, delight and amuse us with his music (and hopefully we will get to write another song with him – we all laughed so hard last time our sides hurt!).  Please contact the Cancer Resource Center at 805-652-5459 to join us next time!

Last Night’s Creativity Central was a BEAUTIFUL Success!

We had so much fun last night creating phase 1 of our latest project, “The Jammin Jungle,” based on a jungle scene that Nicole outlined for the group to paint.  This painting will serve as the background for 3D animals the group will make out of clay next week.  Here is a photo of Nicole’s outline, with cookie cutters showing where the 3d animals might be placed:

Next the group came to paint the picture – this time our amazing team was Gillian and Allyson, and they were off to a brave and beautiful start from the very first brush strokes:

The work environment at the lovely new Cancer Resource Center was cosy:

-and the team was hard at work:

With Allyson exhibiting a most impressive daubing technique:

From the very start, Gillian and Allyson worked as a wonderful team:

The joy, zen and beauty of working with color is perhaps best expressed in this closeup – it was almost as if the colors were giving us a hug as we worked:

The team was almost done:

-and then, quite beautifully, finished together:

Success!  -and look at the clock behind us – we lost all track of time!

We had lots of laughs, and it was a very special time, thanks to the inspiration and creative spirits of Gillian and Allyson:

-and here is a closeup of the finished result:

New Public Exhibition of Nicole’s Artwork & Poetry

The new Cancer Center of Community Memorial Hospital is a beautiful architectural masterpiece, and Nicole was so proud to be a small part of the building’s introduction to the community when the City of Ventura and the Cancer Center offered to include some of Nicole’s artwork and poetry in the outer window display. Today the City of Ventura team is hard at work setting up the display. Here is a photo of Julie Maechler, of the City of Ventura, and Gerald Zwers, her able artist-in-his-own-right assistant, starting to set up the exhibit:

Julie and Gerald, Preparing the Outside Window Display

Here too is a photo of some of Nicole’s artwork, as it is lined up in the windows, waiting to be hung:

It will be exciting to see the entire exhibit when it's all done!

Many thanks to Julie and Gerald for posing for this picture! Thank you Cancer Center, City of Ventura (and Denise Sindelar of the City) for including Nicole’s artwork and poetry, and for all you do for our community!

In addition to these M. Nicole van Dam works being exhibited on the outside of this lovely new building, the Cancer Center has also aquired 17 additional M. Nicole van Dam works on permament exhibition inside the new Cancer Center, pictures of this ongoing interior exhibit to be posted soon!

Voting Booth Painting now at City Hall

Voting Booth
Voting Booth” has now been rotated into my ongoing exhibit at Santa Barbara’s City Hall, along with several other of my works.  I am so honored that my work has been exhibited at City Hall for several years now.

Voting Booth” is an interesting piece.  To best understand my intent, first look at the shoes showing below the voting booth curtains.  You will see a variety of shoes, symbolizing our diverse populace.  For example (left to right), you will see workman’s boots, then high heels, then sensible shoes and a cane, then a mother’s shoes alongside her little girl’s shoes (and her girl’s doll’s shoes), and then a businessman’s shoes and briefcase.  Next look at the voting booth curtains directly above each pair of shoes – montaged into each voting booth curtain is what the voter wearing those shoes might be voting for.  For example, the workman boots have a voting booth curtain above them with an outdoors scene and labor symbol (hammer), while the mother’s shoes have a voting booth curtain above them that has symbols of childhood education and playground.  Above the voting booth curtains are symbols for what we all share, regardless of the ‘shoes’ we wear.  For example, the fireman in the upper left of the painting symbolizes the services we all need for our safety and well being.  We share the right to vote and we pay our taxes, symbolized by the voting stub and the wallet.  You might notice an almost stain glass like overall feel to this artwork – that is an intentional nod to the passions that politics can stir.   My goal is that the more you look at this intricate work, the more you will see.

A limited edition print of “Voting Booth” will also be on exhibit at the Ventura gallery at which I am the featured artist for the month of February (reception tonight!).  “Voting Booth” has also been paired with an interesting poem on politics in my book, “Tempo – the Rhythm and Rhyme of the Artist.”

Great Photos from our January 17 Musical Art Time!

Dr. Kafka treated us all to a most amazing, inspiring treat of music – it seems he knows hundreds of songs by heart, and plays and sings each one with a totally engaging magical joyous spirit.
The Super-Talented Dr. Kafka, above.
First, we all worked on our greeting cards as Dr. Kafka played.  The scene looked pretty much like this:
The Greeting Card outline Nicole provided as a start was aptly called “Guitar Magic”:
The group’s concentration was impressive
-and the results were fun!

Rose holding up a gorgeous card she created
Lynn sharing her creation – see how different everyone’s color choices are – we noticed everyone has their own take, very fun!
Nicole’s husband joins in on the fun!
After we finished our cards, came the amazing, unique treat of writing a song with Dr. Kafka – about GRANDMA RUBY – you had to be there to understand how spontaneous and fun that was – we laughed til our sides hurt!
MANY MANY THANKS TO DR. KAFKA FOR MAKING THAT JOYOUS UPLIFTING MEMORY POSSIBLE!
