Gorgeous New Rain & Garden Boots !

I’m always thrilled to share new products made with my art, but this post has special sentimental meaning for me. First a little background: Some ten years ago I created an artwork for my Mom several years ago called “I Love You Mom” – it looks like this:

I Love You Mom

-and now…drumroll…there is a rain and garden boot out with this design:

Imagine how happy I am that my Mother now gets to share with me that this artwork is now a rain and garden boot! How FUN!

The “I Love You Mom” boot is absolutely gorgeous! Just LOVE it!

As if that weren’t enough to make my joy absolutely uncontainable, there is another rain and garden boot based on my art “Flight of Fancy” that was also just introduced:

In case you’re curious, here are the four boots released this year, all available at fine retailers and on Amazon:

Lotus Root Magic!

I am trying to bring art into my cooking, and always enjoy finding a new and beautiful food. Especially a healthy one.

My husband and I ventured into a new restaurant, and the primary vegetarian choice there was something called Lotus Root. Having a choice of …one thing, I decided to try lotus root. It turned out to be a lovely and tasty dish. Much better than my husband’s carnivorous fare, by the way! I researched the nutritional info on lotus root, only to find that lotus is not only pretty, it’s HEALTHY and versatile. You can stir fry it, eat it raw, add it to stews and soups, and much more, and it has the nutritional profile of a super food, lots of good healthy stuff. -And so began my quest to find lotus root – FRESH lotus root, not dried.

A WONDERFUL Ojai health food store named Westridge Market, thanks to their AMAZING produce manager Robin, special ordered it for me and had it on their shelves in less than 24 hours. WOW! Let’s hear it for small town America! SPECIAL KUDOS TO WESTRIDGE MARKET! THANK YOU ROBIN!

I wanted to support this lovely market that found this hard-to-find Lotus Root for me, so I did all my shopping there that day. Robin the produce manager introduced me to some fun new things, like Watermelon Beets and Kohlrabi. A recipe idea began forming in my mind. Here are some of the things I purchased at Westridge that day, that form much of the basis of this recipe:

Some of the Ingredients

In this photo you can see the lotus root – it’s the white item in the back with all the holes. For this recipe, I used both lotus roots in the package. This recipe will serve two super generously and up to four fairly comfortably.

The lotus root came fresh but shrink wrapped and already peeled, which I think might be good thing. From the web it appears that cleaning lotus root on your own could be a bear due to the holes, so having the hard part done of cleaning the holes didn’t bother me a bit! You will also see the watermelon beet and kohlrabi, one sweet onion, two tangerines, a bottle of soy sauce, some spaghetti noodles (you can use any type of noodle, or even none, the lotus root holds its own). You will also see one of my all time fav ingredients – so flavorful that using them is almost like cheating – shitaki mushrooms. Not on this photo but taken from my home supplies are minced garlic, minced ginger, a cup of grapefruit juice, 2 tablespoons flour, one fuji apple, about two cups of sugar snap peas (you can use any vegetable that can be stir fried, which is just about any vegetable!), olive oil (about one third cup), toasted sesame seed oil (about one third cup), some yummie ginger-blackberry balsamic (any high end balsamic is nice), 2 cups of veggie broth, one veggie bullion cube, and blue agave nectar. For ‘hardware’ you’ll need a large (and I mean LARGE 12+”) covered saute pan/skillet/wok for sauteeing/stir frying and (only if you want sauce) you will also need a sauce pan with lid.

I call the recipe I made up “Lotus Root Magic”

LOTUS ROOT MAGIC

Here’s what I did:

In your stir fry/sautee/skillet/pan, coat the bottom with olive oil and then begin to sautee the minced ginger and minced garlic. Mmmmmm smells GREAT!

Clean and half an onion, and then slice each half into 1/4 inch thick slices. Perfection not needed here. Add the onion to the stir fry pan. Toss it about a bit. Drizzle with balsamic, a few artistic lines of drizzle of balsamic will do. Toss it about a bit some more. Lower heat and cover the stir fry pan, and mix the ingredients occasionally as you prepare the rest of this recipe.

If you’re going to add noodles to this dish, get the noodles going now. You’re on your own for how to boil water/prep noodles 🙂 Your noodles should be finished a wee bit before the rest of the dish is ready for them – that’s fine – when your noodles are done, put them in a strainer and let them…drain.

Now the fun stuff:

THE MAIN EVENT: Wash thoroughly and then slice lotus root (about 1/8″ thick):

Sliced Beautiful Lotus Root

LOOK HOW BEAUTIFUL THE SLICED LOTUS ROOT IS!

Add the lotus root to the onion and then add some toasted sesame oil over the lotus root – you don’t want to drown the dish, but you want to probably use about 1/3 cup toasted sesame seed oil.

After everything in the sautee pan has simmered together a bit and gotten to know each other (about 5 minutes of you mixing the contents), add a generous squirt blue agave nectar.

While the above is simmering, clean and crudely chop the kohlrabi and thinly slice the lovely watermelon beet:

Sliced Watermelon Beet and Kohlrabi

How gorgeous is that watermelon beet?

Add the kohlrabi and the watermelon beet to the stir fry mixture and mix well with everything else.

Clean and crudely chop the Fuji apple and add that to the stir fry pan.

Clean and add sugar snap peas (or snow peas or any other stir fry veggies)

Gently clean and slice the shitaki mushrooms and add that to the stir fry mixture as well.

If you’re wondering what all this looks like, LOOK AT THIS:

Gorgeous Stir Fry

Is that not spectacular?

So you could sautee/stir fry all that until it’s tender, or you can go on at this point and make your favorite sauce. Fyi, if you’re adding noodles, you should probably add sauce.

SAUCE (optional): Here’s the sauce I made up for this particular dish, and my husband loves it, that’s a good sign:

In small pan

add 2 cups veggie broth and 3 capfulls soy sauce

Bring to boil (stir occasionally) and then add

1 vegetarian bullion cube (yes, we’re making this STRONG) (or you can use a heaping tablespoon Better than Bullion vegetarian)(either way, this is not a low sodium dish, but otherwise (in my opinion) it’s awesomely healthy)

After all that has dissolved and is blended together, gently stir in 2 tbs flour, a bit at a time. The two tbs flour makes it just a wee bit thicker, but not super thick. This is not a gravy, it’s just a light sauce. Keep on stirring! Work to get all (OK, you can cheat here – most) of the lumps out of the sauce, continuing to stir.

Here’s the secret yummie part: Add in a generous 1/4 cup grapefruit juice. Stir a bit. Whooohooo – taste that sauce!

Add the sauce from the sauce pan into the stir fry pan. Gently stir everything together. Let it all simmer and dance together over a low heat. You don’t want to burn the sauce (or anything else for that matter). Just let all the goodness simmer together stir occasionally.

After you feel that all the ingredients are best friends (thoroughly mixed, tender to your taste, etc), add your noodles and stir in noodles under low heat let. Give the noodles lots of time to absorb all the juices and heat and yummie symphony of flavors. Here is what it looked like in my pan, after sauce and noodles added and stirred:

Add Noodles of choice

Gorgeous as that is, we’re not done yet.

Peel the two mandarin oranges and separate each wedge, pull off any stringy things.

Here’s how I plated my dish – I serve it on a dish with a slight Asian motif, with mandarin orange slices just placed around the outside edge.

The Final Plate

OMG – SUBLIME!

Voila!

Season’s Sparrow

So often the lovely sparrow is overlooked, but I love the sparrows in my garden. For one of my first licensing projects, I was asked to design a 3D jar, and I decided to create a jar honoring the sparrows that cheer me through every season. I called the jar “Seasons Sparrow,” and part of the design was that inside the jar it said, “Beauty in All Things.” I also wrote a companion poem “Seasons Sparrow” that was published in the company’s international collector magazine, which was a fun treat – I still have my copy of the magazine. The President of the company told me it was their favorite jar they had ever made, which meant a lot to me. Here’s the artwork, the poem, and how the lovely jar looked:

Seasons Sparrow

Sparrow of Winter
Where did you go
Almost disappearing
Behind drifts of snow
You live in a world of crystal
Glittering ice lining each branch and thistle
Sparkling as you flit your quiet dance
Before you take flight

Sparrow of Spring
In the dogwoods I hear your sweet song
You will be well hidden amidst the leaves
Before long
I see you flying, seeking your mate
Soaring through pastel skies on nature’s date
Building your nest amidst blossoms, buds and green
Your nursery soon full and not easily seen

Sparrow of Summer
Awash in a sea of leaves
Happily singing in the lazy breeze
Your job is done, an empty nest
Testifying that you’ve earned your rest
But ‘tis not all chirp and play
As you busily store Summer’s abundance
For another day

Sparrow of Autumn
Luminous fluttering falling leaves barely distract your eye
As you curiously watch plain me pass by
Raking leaves
You should know me by now, I think you do
I am the one, rain or shine, to fill your feeder for you
Framed by this world jeweled gold and red
The table is well set for my Sparrow to be fed

My Sparrow of Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn
My dear, dear friend
I looking forward to spending the seasons with you again.

Cote d’Azur

“Cote d’Azur” is an artwork across 5 canvases completed in 2015. I wanted to capture a playful, colorful beach scene, showing people from all walks of life and body types, each contributing to the beauty of the whole. I grew up on the beach – even went to an elementary school on the beach – and so this scene is personal to me, remembering the large beach umbrellas of my childhood. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. My signature is actually an nvd marking I used primarily in my youth on my art. Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.

Named One of 5 Creatives You Should Know

I just received the most FUN email today – I’ve been chosen as one of 5 “Creatives You Should Know” by the Creative Network Blog (sponsored by StudioVox). It’s such an honor – the article is so well written and includes four other wonderful artists. For my part of the article, the author chose to include my new “The Golden Gate” artwork and my fairly recent “Reading on the River Thales” artwork.

The Golden Gate

For “The Golden Gate” artwork I wanted to capture the picturesque San Francisco city scape along with the watery excitement and beauty that surround the famous Golden Gate Bridge.  I lived in San Francisco for a wonderful summer and still visit there with my husband when we get the chance.  The Golden Gate is my most recent work, so to have it chosen to be featured in the article is important to me and very meaningful.

Reading on the River Thales

The “Reading on the River Thales” artwork is my watery tribute to philosopher Thales of Miletus, whose theory was that all things contain water. Thales predates Aristotle (and was admired by Aristotle).   Thales was a true independent thinker and is often considered to be the first to attempt to explain the world around him without reference to mythology.   As a result, Thales is sometimes referred to as the father of science and the first true mathematician.  Since I admire independent thinkers, and Thales was apparently quite a courageous one, this artwork seems like a fun tribute.

Such fun to have both these artworks selected!  Here is a link to this lovely article, and thank you all for your support!

For “The Golden Gate” artwork, created in 2014, I wanted to capture the picturesque San Francisco city scape along with the watery excitement and beauty that surround the famous Golden Gate Bridge. I lived in San Francisco for a wonderful summer and still visit there with my husband when we get the chance. Within a month of its completion, The Golden Gate is one of two artworks highlighted in the “Creatives You Should Know” article on The Creative Network blog that reviewed my artwork and named me as a Creative You Should Know. To have “The Golden Gate” chosen to be featured in the article is important to me and very meaningful. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. Note, for example, the two sailboats in the foreground. My signature is hidden in the waterm but actually runs the entire span of the bridge, so while it is hidden, it is not small. Muerta Lisa

Muerta Lisa

Muerta Lisa  is my smiling guess at what the “Mona Lisa” would have looked like had Da Vinci been a Goth style painter (or alternatively, Muerta Lisa a ghoulish nod to what Mona Lisa might look like today a few hundred years later).  I wanted my Muerta Lisa to have the enigmatic smile of “Mona Lisa” along with Mona Lisa’s allure and mystique.  This artwork presented many firsts for me – beyond the first skulls, this was also my first play with candles.  I created this artwork with Dios Los Muertos, the Grateful Dead, and Halloween in mind.  The more you look, the more skulls you will find.  It was my hope that Muerta Lisa‘s flowers would make her as pretty and engaging as can be,     Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

Talented Emily Creates Two Dragons!

I was thrilled when Emily’s mother Michele emailed me Emily’s latest magnificent creation – two dragons! The first dragon is very large and is billowing hot pink swirls, toasting a marshmallow on the tree stump, very fun idea. One of the things I like about this artwork is that Emily uses so much imagination to create this idea. Emily does some advanced technique here too – notice that Emily uses a swirl pattern in the smoke of the large dragon, and then Emily uses a similar swirl pattern on the pebble and flowers on the ground, and more of the swirl pattern also on the top of the tree stump. That is an excellent use of pattern Emily! Emily also has a fun use of color – I like the blueish stars and touches of yellow. Emily’s artwork not only has a yellow sun, but it has some yellow flowers and some yellow by the hot pink swirls. I think the way Emily uses the yellow color in this artwork adds something very special, nice use of color Emily! The first dragon is large and easy to spot, but part of the fun of this artwork is finding Emily’s second dragon, which is much smaller. Hint: Look on the ground for that subtle second dragon. I like artworks like this, where the more you look, the more surprises you will find. GREAT WORK Emily! I am so proud of you! Thank you mom Michele for sharing!

Liv Creates 2 Beautiful Artworks!

I am so impressed with the two amazing artworks that Liv’s mother Heather sent me! They are just AWESOME!
Let’s look at Liv’s beautiful artworks one at a time:

First, there is “Puppy of the Rainbow.” I love that name, don’t you?
Puppy of the Rainbow by Liv

There’s so much to like about this “Puppy of the Rainbow” artwork. I love the rainbow eyes, I love Liv’s signature and that it’s bold and designed into the art (I like to do that too).  The colors are just great and fearless and fun.   Who wouldn’t want to meet this happy dog?  Liv is very strong in her details too – I love the main horizontal wavy line –  that Liv just didn’t do a straight line for the horizon.  In fact, Liv is great at not using blah straight lines for the brown background parts too or for the sky.  She doesn’t make them too dark or too light, so they’re not distracting, the lines just add to the effect.  That makes everything so much more interesting.  The blue sun is perfect, and Liv has the balance of color just right.  GREAT JOB LIV!

Liv’s next work is called “Colorful Cacti.”  It’s an excellent artwork too:

Insta-Frame2 Liv Colorful Cacti for web

Who wouldn’t want to see these fun cacti outside their window?  I love that each cactus has its own personality.  I like too that Liv used a diagonal horizon line instead of straight – see how that draws your eye up from left to right.  Well done Liv!   Liv has great use of lines, gives this artwork lots of movement – you can see Liv’s technique in the way she colors each cactus planter, that also moves your eye from the bottom left cactus to the upper right cactus.  Excellent Liv!  These are the cheeriest, friendliest cactus anywhere!

Keep up the great work Liv!  I’m so proud of you!  I bet your Mom is too 🙂

Butterfly Fantasy

Butterfly Fantasy

I have always been fascinated by butterflies, with all their colors and lovely shapes.  Butterfly Fantasy is my reaching beyond the bright colors to a more intoxicating palette, to create an exotically moody piece, full of movement.  In Butterfly Fantasy, I tried to capture the special world of one particular butterfly as he moves through the flowers and the shadows the flowers create.  I was thrilled when Butterfly Fantasy was selected for international licensing on garden and rain boots.

Check Out Sydney’s Polar Bear – Brrrrrr!

Young Artist Sydney has created two fun artworks that her super supportive Mom Valerie sent me – I think you will love the happy colors of both of these special artworks:
First, before I show the polar bear, look at Sydney’s very fun cat. See her confident signature at the bottom – love that! Sydney created this at a workshop, which can be great places to learn about different art supplies and techniques.  Thanks to super-Mom Valerie, I am also sharing a photo of Sydney at her art workshop showing her inspiration, you can see what a great job Sydney did on this cat!

I like the fearless blue in the background of this cat. I don’t think any other color would have worked as well Sydney – great color choices!

Next is Sydney’s wonderful polar bear – thanks to Sydney’s super-Mom Valerie, Sydney has some private art lessons too!  Sydney created this wonderful polar bear at one of her private art lessons.  I can feel the arctic chill by just looking at this polar bear!  What do you think makes this polar bear art feel cold?  Do you think it might be the icy blues and whites and soft touches of yellow?  Is it the light colors against the dark ground?  That there are no flowers or green colors?  Looking at art to see how an artist makes you feel a certain way helps artists learn how to achieve emotion through their art:

Notice also the way the polar bear’s back slopes upward – that is very much the way polar bear backs do look – a lot of young artists might have just made a straight back, but Sydney really looked hard at what she was painting and appreciated how the polar bear’s back really looks. Great job Sydney! -And thanks to super supportive art Mom Valerie for sending these fun photos to me, and for being such a super supportive art Mom!

Meet Sydney!

So fun to share the artwork of Sydney, a young artist. Sydney’s Mom Valerie is so supportive of Sydney’s work, that’s just wonderful and is so helpful to a young artist. Way to go Mom Valerie!

One of the things Sydney’s Mom does to support Sydney’s art is to take Sydney to art workshops and private lessons.  The photos below show Sydney at one of the art workshops her Mom brought Sydney to, and look at the fun artwork Sydney is holding (GREAT JOB ON THE CAT, SYDNEY!).  I love that Sydney seems to be so thoroughly enjoying herself!

Sydney hard at work painting at a workshop. Great concentration Sydney!

Sydney hard at work painting at a workshop. Great concentration Sydney!

I often get asked if I teach art (no) and what I think of art workshops and private lessons for children.  Here’s what I think of these things:

Workshops and art classes for young artists can be great because classes often have so many awesome art supplies to play with!  Good teachers share helpful tips on how to do things too, which can be great help.

Having said that,  some of my favorite artists are self taught!  Just because one young artist might be ahead in how ‘real’ the art looks, doesn’t mean the young artist is ahead in freedom of expression.  Those are very different concepts, and BOTH skill with art tools and freedom of creative expression are important.

While art classes can give young artists valuable technical skills, finding your inner creative voice is something each artist does for herself.

Sometimes talented young artists in class (or sibling) settings can get frustrated because what they create (to them) doesn’t look as good as other kids creations, or maybe the young artist got inspired with an assignment and then created something that was not what the teacher was at that moment trying to teach.  That’s when good teachers are very important – their words and understanding of the young artist sensitivity is very important.  A teacher not thoroughly understanding the young artist means that teacher’s art classes – even private lessons – might not be the best thing for an artist. Each young artist needs to learn to judge herself by her own measuring stick, and that’s a hard thing to master, even for adults.  The last thing we want to do is to discourage a young artist without even realizing it!

If I had to choose an art teacher for a young artist, I would not judge the art teacher by how ‘real’ the art their students create looks!  I would judge an art teacher by how fearless and confident their students are in trying new things and playing with color and shapes and geometry and gravity.   Young artists should not strive to create art that is not within a young artist’s own voice, but rather to perfect their own creative voice.  If 4 children did a picture of a mouse, I would love to see 4 very different mice artworks, showing that children felt free to create their own spin on what is the essence of ‘mouse-ness.’   Here’s a clear example of what I mean, and a great way for parents to have some fun and share with young artists how artists through time can be very different from one another, and yet each be considered a great master:  Can you imagine Pablo Picasso, M. C. Escher, Norman Rockwell, and Rembrandt van Rijn all being art students in the same art class?  Can you imagine all four of these artists creating mice that all looked the same?  No way!  That’s what I’m talking about.  A great art teacher lets Picasso be Picasso, Escher be Escher, Rockwell be Rockwell, and Rembrandt be Rembrandt.

Fun Exercise for Parents to share with Young Artists (will take four separate days):  Show your young artist artworks by Picasso, and ask your young artist to draw a mouse the way Picasso might.  Repeat for each of Escher, Rockwell, and Rembrandt.  After your young artist has created her four very different mice, ask your young artist what she learned from each.  Ask your young artist what mouse was the most fun to create and why.  That’s one good way to help your young artist discover their inner voice.  It’s also a fun way to explore art history!

That’s why it’s important, if you do decide to give your young artist art lessons or art classes, to find just the right art teacher for your particular, one-of-a-kind, precious young artist.    What is a fabulous teacher for one young artist might not be the right art teacher for another young artist.   As a general rule of thumb, I recommend that parents looking for art teachers should talk to other parents who have had great experiences, and look for student’s art that isn’t trying too hard to be perfectly realistic.  I would be happier to see a ‘mouse’ painted in many styles and colors by the different students instead of many realistic, uniform, very similar mice.   Look for fun colors and signs of creativity at play!  Look for art students who ENJOY creating and are fearless in their creativity.  Young artists need to find their artistic voice at their own pace.  Creating art is a very personal thing, and each parent needs to figure out what approach is best for their precious, sensitive young artist.

I am so glad that Sydney’s wonderful Mom Valerie found the right classes and teachers for Sydney – it is clear Sydney is thriving and enjoying herself!  -And the artwork Sydney makes is so fun!  KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, SYDNEY!

Rainbow Blossoms

Rainbow Blossoms

Rainbow Blossoms  is a bright, cheery celebration of a gentle rainfall in a spring garden.  The more you look, the more little worlds you will see.  This artwork was inspired by my love of spring bulbs – like tulips and daffodils – and how happy everything looks in my garden when we get those gentle rains.  There are some surprises hidden in this garden!   Available in Limited Edition prints and more, available at Create.bz.

May Mosaic Madness at Creativity Central!

At our May Creativity Central session, our creative group created lovely mosaics out of paper. In addition to tissue paper and basic kid grade construction paper, for the mosaics we also used a little left over holiday wrapping paper. We think that there is no paper that you can’t use for this! The first step for the mosaics was for each member of the group to cut out 8″x10″ rectangle of light weight cardboard. Nicole then sketched onto the cardboard whatever the Creativity Central member wanted on their cardboard – so one person chose a sea horse, one person chose a hummingbird, one person chose Nicole’s pet bird, and one person chose a cat face that was also a sun! After that, every one tore or cut different colors and textures of papers into little irregular shaped pieces and started the process of gluing on the paper chips using Elmer’s glue sticks. Here are some photos from the May session. Note: The paper mosaic projects will be continued into the next session, but the hours flew by! No one could believe it was time to leave!

The Vegetable Garden is PLANTED!

Admittedly, I’m later in getting the veggie boxes done this year than ever before – in large part because my world of art has been unusually demanding – but I’m glad to say the veggie boxes are now fully planted. You should have heard the birds chirping while I planted – as if to say, “Better late than never! Finally the monkey is feeding us!” The first step was to bolster my aging veggie boxes and add new soil. We then “repaved” the pathways with some palm tree leaves (makes a great weed deterrent on my paths!). Then plant, plant, plant! The boxes are filled to the brim with tomato plants (I went for all cherry and pear tomatoes this year – Sweet 100, Sungold and Yellow Pear), golden peppers, golden beets, rainbow Swiss chard, leek, romaine, mixed lettuce, pole beans and a few other past year favs. Of course, not one to give up on what hasn’t worked – we are also trying (AGAIN!) sweet golden corn (the raccoons have beaten me every time), seedless watermelon and green cucumbers. -And something entirely new – Gerbera daisies. It seems our vegetable garden has some very shady corners (thanks to a very happy red flame seedless grape vine), and so rather than fight the shadows and stubbornly plant veggies that won’t thrive there, I’ve decided to plant colorful lovely Gerbera Daisies. I’ve also added a water feature, with a solar pump that is interesting and in its second week. My husband kindly put in a romantic arbor for the grape vine to meander over, and we put a few chairs there to sit and enjoy the view. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Tomorrow I’ll add in my homemade compost, full of happy worms, and go back to the business grind of art. Oh, if all I needed to do was just paint and plant!

The Veggie Boxes always start so neat and tidy!

A handpainted Spanish bird bath with a small solar fountain pump are just what my garden needed! See also the palm tree leaves, which deter weeds, make a great mulch for pathways!

Long view across the vegetable garden. See the happy grape vine!

In “High Spirits!”

Great news! My latest book “High Spirits!” has just been released on Amazon! If you like the blend of quotes, inspirations and art that you find on this site, I’ve created a book that contains encouragement, inspiration. When I was writing “High Spirits!” I was thinking about all the creatives and entrepreneurs I meet that ask for encouragement, ask me how I keep things together when it’s rough slogging. I know I was smiling by the time I finish each read through of this book – I hope it does the same for you, and THANK YOU again for supporting my creative endeavors! The cover of the book was based on my “High Spirits!” art work:

On the Set

"On the Set" by M. Nicole van Dam

This exciting new artwork, created in 2014, has a secret story within a story. When you look at “On the Set,” the first thing you note is that there is a lot of activity – this is an intentional nod to the hustle and bustle of the entertainment set, where so much goes on behind the scenes. The more you look at this piece, the more you will see. Note, for example, the “Star” – the glamorous lady in pink. The Star actually appears in this artwork three times – in addition to her standing on the stage, you will also see a close up of her emotive face in the viewfinder on one side of the artwork, and her back mirrored in the dresser mirror on the other side of the artwork. You will also see a myriad of lights, cameras and sound equipment. There are also clues as to what the storyline might be about – note the green glistening, sizeable gems around the Star’s neck. These gems were intentionally hued a green color that is the artistic opposite on the color wheel from the very pink of the Star’s dress. Look at the close up of the Star’s face in the viewfinder – is the Star wondering whether the gentleman is a rogue after her jewels, herself, or both? Some of the difficult aspects of creating this work include the difficult-to-achieve multiple lighting effects and the complex stage scene, balancing so much equipment with people having such diverse roles and placement. It was important that the eye be drawn to the center “stage” layer of the artwork, hence the deep red curtain, and yet the “Star” still needed to shine as the Star, which was primarily accomplished through her pink dress and the crown behind her. “On the Set’ is an intriguing new work with Nicole’s Impressionist flair.  Available in Limited Edition prints and on scarves and more, available at Create.bz.
